About Julie

I have three years teaching experience and over 25 years tutoring experience in Chemistry and Organic Chemistry. My success stories include several students being admitted to Pharmacy School, Medical School, Nursing Programs and one into a very competitive Physician's Assistant's program.

My students have ranged in age from 10 to 60+, I am talented at finding the "disconnect" and helping the student to conquer it so they can succeed! I enjoy using a variety of examples and analogies to make the subject matter more clear, and like to explain *why* something is the way it is, not just "do it that way, because that's the way it's done". Understanding the reason behind the steps in problem-solving can carry through several courses!

I obtained my Master's Degree with the intent to teach. I did teach for 3 years at a small Junior College, then moved into industry. However, even while I was working in industry, I tutored several students over the years. After the mini-recession of 2008, when my company cut my position, I moved into tutoring as a more full-time venture. At this point, I have been tutoring for over 25 years, but for the last 15 years it has been my main focus, not just a side gig. I have had the opportunity to work with a wide variety of students in different courses at different schools and universities.

About the lesson

Generally I ask a student what specific topic they are working on in the class. Also, I try to find out what their background is with regard to the course itself, any prerequisites and how they did in those courses. I also request any course materials (syllabus, teacher notes, practice worksheets or past exams) so we have some specific targets to "chew on".

I have tutored students from age 10 to age 60+, in a variety of levels of Math and Chemistry. My main focus now is Chemistry and Organic Chemistry, high school and college level. I have helped students bump their grades from a B to an A, and I have helped failing students turn completely around and pass their class. Most of my students are taking Chemistry because they are trying to get into Medical, Pharmacy, Dental, or Veterinary programs.

Try someone out and see how it goes. Sometimes the first session can be a little rocky, as you get used to each other. Tell them any specific needs or learning styles you are aware of.

She is very thorough when explaining the concepts and most of our sessions were spent reviewing the textbook and PowerPoint slides. Julie would also help me with the worksheets I received in class and did a good job explaining how to complete a mechanism or a conceptual question. I also really appreciated how I could text her a question I had at any time during the week, and she would take the time to text back a response without an extra charge. Julie is very knowledgeable in chemistry, and I highly recommend her for any chemistry class.

I generally bill by the hour, but I am a little loose with the clock - if we do a 1 hour lesson and it is 1 hour 10 min, I just bill for 1 hour. I'm not about "nickel-and-diming", and I'm happy to answer quick questions between regular lessons. I don't want you to be stuck on something and having to sit on it for 3 or 4 days until we are supposed to meet! Additionally, if you need a bunch of hours at once, I can do a little "creative rounding".
