About Deaven

While in school I was constantly trying to find someone to help make sense of the Mumbo-jumbo that my professors were spending 3 hours a week talking about. Now as a college graduate I want to help those who feel like they are lost in a sea of knowledge and drowning on all the information. While earning my Bachelors of Biology I tutored students in anything from General Biology, to Anatomy and physiology, to microbiology. I worked as a substitute teacher for roughly 6 months before I knew I wanted more personalized in-depth tutoring time. I have completed courses and labs in Principles or biology, microbiology, genetics, cell biology, human physiology, botany, medical terminology, immunology, developmental biology, and human dissection. As well as, Inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, biochemistry, and physics all with labs. I worked in a research lab all four years of my undergraduate degree presenting and earning the distinguished research award at Pittsburg State University’s Research Colloquium. I believe that everyone is capable of understanding science, and once you do you’ll see the living world as a new and positively wonder filled place.

I started tutoring in college and afterwards worked as a substitute teacher for roughly 6 months before realizing I wanted a more structured, one-on-one session.

I have my bachelors of biology with minors in physics and chemistry. I tutored students from each category of biology from general to botany to anatomy and physiology. I also did research with Dr. Santimukul Santra, a chemistry professor at Pittsburg State University all four years of my undergraduate degree.

About the lesson

To start off the sessions I ask where they are at in their lessons, what parts they understand and what they don’t, if I feel like they have a grasp on the easier contents I’ll quiz them to see just how well they know that material before going on. I will then go on to the parts that they don’t understand completely or at all. I like to explain something then have the student explain it back to me in their own words and even give me examples. I have found that this approach helps the most when students think they are totally lost.

My main experience has been with college students, of who I ask to bring their books, powerpoints and any tests or quizzes they had trouble with.

Be sure to tell the tutor all that confuses you. Even if it starts at the very beginning with cell mitosis or meiosis. When one thing confuses you it feels like everything within that subject confuses you. Don’t worry about feeling inadequate, or unintelligent, because you aren’t, you just don’t know how to make use of the knowledge you’ve been given.

I recently was texted and told by a previous student I tutored that she had been accepted into physical therapy school. She told me that when she first met me she was thinking about giving up and changing her major to “something easier” but because I spent the time and energy to help her through that first tough course she was able to persevere and use skills that I helped her develop in the harder courses that followed.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Think back to the very first lesson, think about what has confused you this far. Write down those things, then each class, each lesson you attend make marks in your notes that signify you didn’t understand that particular section. That way you are able to make better use of your tutors time.
