About Thomas

My life as a researcher has been motovated by curiosity. My co-life as an educator is driven to teach others the thing I have learned. Being a life long learner is complicated by being a life long educator. I get excited when I teach, I love what I do, and what pass my enthusiasm for learning on to others.

I love to see students have their "Aha moment" with their difficulties.... when they finally "get it" and can explain/teach it well to others. I had hundreds of Aha moments during my research career and I know how great it feels!

Not sure ... I have always been in science education and research. My entire life has been dedicated to education and learning. I guess, my curiosity as a child drove me into a lifetime of discovery and education

I have a PhD in Chemistry. Before I retired, I taught and did research at Vanderbilt University Medical School. I also helped out in the undergraduate school where I was the Director of the PreHealth Professions Program, taught undergraduate Biology, Biochemistry, and Physiology. I am now a substitute at our local high school

About the lesson

First I do an assessment to find out the current strengths and weaknesses of the student. Second, with the help of the student, do a root cause analysis to find the source of the "weakness issues" of the student. Third, with the student, establish specific goals, plans to reach these goals, and a time line to attain the goals.

I spent my career with undergraduate, medical, and PhD graduate students. Following retirement, for 4 years, I have been a substitute teacher at Camden Hills Regional High School.

i have no experience with K-8 students.

Have a visit (interview) to evaluate if you are a good match and feel that the tutor would help you in your areas of concern.

I am a member of the Camden Conference and I'm the Vice Chair of the Education Committee. This February conference is always the high of my year. In addition, my 2 trips to Scotland each year are important events for me and my wife

2. Are they motivated to learn?
3. Are they willing to work hard?
4. Will they put in the time needed to succeed?
5. Can the achieve their goals WITHOUT a tutor by simply working harder in school?

Usually between $35-55/hr depending on subject and needs of the student. But it is always negotiated ( some students want only 30', some want an hour with 2 subjects, etc)
