About Paula

The Academy of Dance strives to provide excellence in dance education in a professional and nurturing environment. It is our hope that parents will encourage their children to work diligently in realizing their goals to acquire the grace, poise and self-esteem that ballet affords them.

We love helping our students develop skills of determination and agility, and building their self-confidence. Ballet develops grace, and the discipline of the movement and practice promotes the tendency toward excellent organizational skills. We love seeing our children grow not just in their dancing, but in their concentration levels, superior understanding of commitment, artistry, the desire for self-expression, as well as exceptional physical fitness. Additionally, we get to be part of a child's mental development, improving memorization which can even improve dyslexia and learning disabilities. Each and every one of our teachers has a passion for dance and for teaching, and we get to do what we love with an amazing group of kids, week in and week out.

Paula Deans Fichtenkort began her training in England in the Royal Academy of Dance tradition. After coming to the United States she lived and trained in the Midwest as well as the New York/Connecticut area. She is the founder and former director of the Westport Academy of Dance. This Connecticut institution has been in existence for over 30 years. Miss Paula is well known as an experienced, sensitive teacher, interested in finding creative and personal methods to support the growth of each student.

The Academy of Dance in Savannah offers classical ballet based on the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) technique. The most identifiable aspect of the RAD method is the attention to detail when learning the basic steps. While the difficulty of an exercise may only increase slightly from grade to grade, more importance is placed on whether the student is performing the step with improved technique.

About the lesson

We place them in a class appropriate for their age and skill level. We believe in small classrooms that provide a lot of technique and detailed breakdowns of each movement. When a student is ready, we will move them up into the next level. A student also benefits greatly from performing in our yearly show, gaining rehearsal, dance and performance experience, as well as camaraderie with their peers.

All kinds! We have taken touring groups all over the world, sent dancers on to be professionals all over the country, had successful models, produced other amazing dance teachers, and have also had students who have benefitted from taking once a week in addition to their other curriculars.

Ask to try out classes. Ask the other students what they think about the school and the other students, and how they think they've grown as dancers.

Go see a performance put on by the school to see what kinds of dance they teach and what kinds of music they use.

The student should come first, so make sure your learning needs will be a priority with all of your teachers before signing up for a full slate of classes.

It's so hard to choose! We have a yearly Christmas show, 'Twas the Night Before Christmas, that we always have so much fun preparing for and it's amazing to watch the kids grow through different roles over the years.

We have guest teachers conduct camps every Summer, and Princess Camps and intensive camps for our younger dancers, and those are a wonderful tradition as well.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Ask about the teacher's training, and why they love to teach. Tell them your goals and ask them how they can help you get there. Ask about things that are important to you, like getting pointe shoes, performing or competing, or community involvement.

You shouldn't be afraid to ask your teacher anything, and they should always give you an honest and specific answer. We are here for you, the student.
