About Deja

I have had a burning passion for art since I was a young child starting the craft at the age of three years old. Art has been a generational blessing passed down in my family. The amount of expression that I can create within a body of work motivates me to continue my artistic journey.

When I first began creating work, I made things that seemed “beautiful” because that was my perception of what art should be. I didn’t see the beauty in something that’s not necessarily beautiful, but rather aesthetically pleasing. I had confined myself into such a small box, not truly looking into the work that I had been creating and the meaning behind it.

By the time of my junior year of high school I started to fully invest myself into art, the history behind it, mediums, and styles. I graduated high school as an advertising art major, and received an art scholarship. I enrolled at Villa Maria College, a private Catholic college located in Cheektowaga, New York, focusing heavily on a variety of arts and physcial therapy. I received my BFA degree, with integrated arts as my major, and fine arts with a study of contemporary social issues, as my minor. Throughout college, I began my journey of identity exploration within myself culturally, ethnically, and racially. I found these ideas to be more meaningful to me rather than creating something with no real idea behind it.

From there, I found my calling. My work started becoming less about me and more about the others of my community, (Black American/African, & Latinx) because I saw the way my expressionist work of identity touched them. They related to my work and the struggles that we share together, along with our beautiful culture. I have reached a point in my career now where creating artwork has become selfless, as my goal is to be a voice for the people of my community who want to see artwork that represent themselves.

As apart of the process to graduate college, I decided to intern at Buffalo Center for Arts and Technology, where my role was an assistant Fine Arts instructor for inner city youth. This experience changed my life and inspired so much of my artwork that came after. From this internship, I moved forward into the education field and have utilized my BFA degree within the classroom setting of schools in Buffalo, NY. I have formed so many great relationships with children from the inner cities, to many different refugees, just through bonding from simple art activities. Prior to this, I had experience as an embedded art tutor at my college.

My goal is to teach all my students, (adult and children alike) to explore themselves, the world around them, and make a connection with their idenity to spark the creativity that resides within them.

I have achieved so many great things in my career thus far, along with having many art exhibitons, I have had the great oppurtunity of creating public murlas within my city, for businesses who wanted to add culture to their space. I hold experience working as a freelance artist for Prodigy The Agency, a consulting ad agency, located in Atlanta, Georgia. I've become a welcomed member of the U.S Coast Guard Art program, where I create and donate artwork depicting the men and women who serve, to educate a diverse group of individuals. One of my most favorable moments, has been my creation of cultural Puerto Rican masks known as Vejigante's (Bey-Hee-Gan-tay) worn by mascots during parade celebrations. I gathered local aspiring dancers as volunteers, to mascot the Vejigante during our 2019 Puerto Rican Day Parade. This was especially important because these masks are not often seen here, or displayed at our parade events. Currently, I am the only active and professional Vejigante mask maker in my city and Western New York area. My goal had been to educate our younger genration of Puerto Ricans of our culture, and inspire them to connect more with their identity. I had been commended and thanked by the Grand Marshal of the Puerto Rican and Hispanic Day parade, for my creation and display in the parade.

I truly enjoy art as it is a passion of mine. Creating artwork has always been therapeutic to me and I have always longed to make a name for myself in the art world, and help others using art as a form of therapy. Each year I create new bonds with students and inspire individual's creativity. That is truly rewarding to me. I enjoy aiding my students creativity, and inspiring them to become more outspoken of what they feel most passionate about.

I began teaching as an embedded tutor at my college. I later interned as assistant Fine Arts instructor at Buffalo Center for Arts & Technology and truly enjoyed every moment I spent in my position. Afterwards, I joined AmeriCorps organization and placed myself at West Minster Economic Delveopment Initiative, as an after school Visual Arts teacher and mentor for refugee children of various backgrounds. Currently, I continue my work as a Visual Arts teacher at Buffalo Center for Arts & Technology.

I hold a highschool diploma in Advertising Arts, and a BFA degree from Villa Maria College of Cheektowaga, New York. In college, studied Integrated Arts as my major, and Fine Arts with a focus on contemporary social issues as my minor. As owner of Deja Marie Visual Art, I create cultural artwork for my community, that educates a wider audience on a variety of cultures, traditions, social and ecomonic issues.

I have experience working at my college alongside my professors, as an embedded art tutor for freshman students in various art majors. In the Buffalo, NY school systems, I have worked as mentor and after school visual arts teacher for refugee children, and at risk youth of the inner cities. In my current positon, I am assigned to create art lesson plans that help spark the creativity of the youth. Through various themes, I challenge my students to create artwork that tells their story, one that will altogether make a statement on their identity, and the social and economic climate they live in. My experiece extends to creating public murals for local businesses, partnering with cultural art events, and freelancing and or becoming a member of other art organizations.

About the lesson

I start off by getting to know them, their interests and what they find to be most important and rewarding about creating art. Here, I'm able to learn more about them, their comforability with sharing, and build a good form of communication that will develope into a respectful relationship between teacher and student.

I have worked with students of various backgrounds. Working with inner city youth and refugee children from African and Asian countries has become more common for me.

I would advise all students to look at, and or request to view the CV of each art instructor they are looking to hire. I would also make sure to note how well the instructor is at building a strong respectable relationship between teacher and student.
