About Kat

I began taking art lessons at the age of 4 and have dedicated my life to learning many of the artistic disciplines - Sketching/Illustration, Acrylic Painting, Oil Painting, Watercolor Painting, Graphic Design, Photography, and some sculpture and pottery. I've been an art teacher for several years now and I am experienced in teaching all ages from 5+

I think that everyone needs a discipline to help them discover things about themselves. Painting and Illustration are mine.

I first started out teaching local kids in my old neighborhood - I then went on to volunteer as a teaching assistant at the Noyes Museum in Oceanville, NJ. I've also worked in several studios in Philadelphia and New Jersey, teaching Acrylic Painting classes.

I was enrolled in weekend art classes at the age of 4. I spent the first year learning the basics of sketching, shading, etc. I began painting first with acrylic paints and then quickly graduated to oils. Most of my childhood was spent working with oil paints - in high school I focused more on photography and graphic design. I later went on to study Graphic Design and Painting at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. I have been giving Drawing, Painting, and Graphic Design Software classes for over a decade to both adults and children ages 4+.

About the lesson

First I like to work out how far along their skills are - usually just by asking them how experienced they are and maybe looking at some their past work - if they have any. I'm very easy going, but have a deep respect for the discipline of working in the visual arts and the greater life lessons we can learn by applying ourselves to a passion - to learning a discipline. I've had many instructors over the years and I've picked up a little bit of wisdom by observing each of them - as well as from working with my own students.

All types. Almost every age from 5 years old to 99.

Based on years of observing other Art Instructors, I would say that you should make sure your instructor knows how to relay information to you in a way that you will understand and remember it - I've met many people who know how to paint and draw but are still inexperienced in teaching it to others and fail to point out key things to their students. They gloss over details because they forget that the student doesn't know the things that they take for granted.
