About John

I have been a full time professional artist for 40 years. I have been teaching most of that time. I have been teaching weekly in various locations for all that time.

I have been an illustrator and fine artist doing portraits etc. all this time. Because of my diversity I teach in watercolors, oils, pastels, acrylics, pen and ink and drawing.

My own work has been in many galllerys and private collections around the world for many years.

Since I have been teaching for many years I have been very gratified to have many go on to start professional carreers. Others have been able to develop skills that have allowed them to have a meaningful hobby for the rest of their lives. Watching students improve while having fun as well as seeing them sharing their work and their frustrations with fellow students has always been very rewarding.

I was an illustrator and the graphic artist for various companies but 40 years ago I decided I just wanted to work on fine arts and do it on my own. I never looked back but from the start was asked to teach whenever I entered art shows. The teaching evolved from that.

I have been a full time professional artist for 40 years. I have been teaching in various states for nearly that long. I've taught painting and drawing to dozens and dozens of beginners and to many professionals who just needed direction and help with technique. My training was in illustration so my background in realism is an asset to those who want to draw and paint in that way.

About the lesson

I do Zoom classes on line. They are 2 or 2.5hrs. I have groups. Most of the classes are follow along demos but I also have open classes where students work on what they wish and I answer questions as well as do short demos to help. I also do some private classes on line so if interested please ask for more info about that aspect. My classes are for adults or college age.

I have had and continue to have student of all ages from teens wanting to build and portfolio to get into college to retired beginners in their 90's. I've worked with beginners in every medium there is as well as professsional. Also, some of my beginner students have stayed with me long enough to start selling their own work and winning awards in shows.

The main thing is to find an instructor whom you feel is doing work you wish you were doing. Also, to find someone whose personality or way of speaking in class is in a way you find understandable and encouraging.

Before the pandemic and lockdown (when I was doing in class lessons) I hosted a public show of all my students work at a gallery in the Central Ohio area. I'll planning on hosting an on line show and possibly sale of my student's work this summer on my website.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
If a true beginner there is no wrong question. Just say you are just that and if it is a good teacher he or she will ask the right questions to guide you. What the instructor says in that first interview will usually tell you if you will enjoy the class. If you are experienced, tell what you have done, what mediums, show pictures if you can and explain what you want to learn to grow in your skills.

He has experience working with many different mediums and styles. (who knew you could paint with egg yolk???) He definitely has an artistic eye and is able to point me in the right direction when something is going off track. I highly recommend working with John Entrekin.

My classes are on line Zoom classes. I charge $25/class. The classes are from 2 to 2.5 hours. Many classes are demos where you paint along with me. Some of my classes are what I call, "Open Classes" where each student works on whatever they wish in whatever medium and I'm there to assist.

I do also offer private lessons and the pricing there depends on what is wanted, how often, and how long. Contact me for more info.
