About Mike

The Peculiarium is a gallery like no other, and as a co- creator, me, Mike Wellins, and as the lead artist, I'm here to help artists with improving their art, whatever it maybe. I'm constantly painting, sculpting, and cartooning. I have written novels, written and directed for animation, television, and directed hundreds of commercials. I've also written and created hundreds of short films, docs, music videos, comics and more. I don't know much about this crazy world, but I do know about making stuff. And if you aren't familiar with my work, Im happy to send samples so you can see what I do, to make sure were in sync. You can also see my demo reels and films on my youtube page.

I enjoy almost every aspect of the creative process. But I also have learned to manage my enthusiasm so that I stick with things even after they're no longer that much fun. Art is anything you can get away with. I don't like the idea of "fine" art, and it's sense of exclusion. Art can be anything that challenages the artist and connects with the artist and viewer. Comics, animation, anime, monsters, fan art, street art, are all legitimate art. Anyone who tells you different is wrong.

I also think that our society puts too much emphasis on speed, and hard and fast goals. Never get discouraged if you run out of steam in 30 minutes or 3 days. There is value in doodling, there is value in playing, there is value in abstracting, it's biggest value being the enjoyment. It doesn't matter if you restart a project a thousand times, it only matters is that you keep trying and enjoying the process. Don't consider it a "fail" that you ran out of enthusiam and didn't finish. Do something else, come back to it, art doesn't care. Or pull it apart, cannibalize it into something else, or at the very least, learn from it.

I am not a learn by book person and don't do well reading on how to do stuff, but instead I was shown by others, I owe my career to people who were patient enough to show me. I learn when I teach, and I like to see artist grow. Art, whether it's writing, drawing or animation is high level brain work, and it takes practice, but you have to enjoy the practice to get good at it. You have to make enough progress to keep you interested and not get discouraged. There is still a lot of work to be done when the project is no longer fun.

I studied Art and English in college, which gave me an excellent foundation. I've also been a writer, artist and filmmaker since I was very young. I've made hundreds of films, that have appeared in numerous festivals and on Television. I directed animation and live action at Will Vinton Studios and Laika/House for 20 years and have worked in every form of entertainment.

I've written several well reviewed novels, have published articles and essays and have written and produced numerous screenplays large and small. I've been honored with numerous awards including an ASIFA Annie for my directorial work. My films have been seen on Scifi Channel, The Sundance Channel, MTV and many others.

My years of work in the animation field culminates with my Textbook Storytelling through Animation, a textbook from about 10 years ago.

About the lesson

I want to see your work so far, and I want to know what your goals are as an artist and or a professional. These two items will speak volumes on how I can assist you. Are you trying to just improve your technique, just for your own enjoyment? Are you trying to tell better stories, are you working on crafting a portfolio or a demo reel? Do you want to do art to simply relax and explore or are you after a career?

I'm happy to work with all age students and have worked with very small children to people in their 80s. I was a guest artist at the CSU Summer Arts for 14 years off and on, and really enjoyed the sense of collaboration and the collective energy to just create. I enjoy creating and helping create new things.

Know what you're after and be as specific as you can be. Although that doesn't mean a student always have to have a specific "career" if your goal is simply to get better to try new things, relax, enjoy, that's a perfectly valid goal. And goals can change, and should. As you develop art skills other mediums can become more interesting. Other mediums may become less interesting, or you may have done all you can with a given technique/style or theme.

I worked with a younger student, 15 and we created an ususual art film, "Lincolnshire Groove," The film went on to become one of the winners in the Fresh Faces 2016 student show, from the 2016 Portland Int'l Film festival and the NW Film center.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
How do your goals mesh with the teachers ideas, concept and almost most importantly, their teaching style. This assumes that all teachers are good and competent. To that idea, I could learn something from any teacher who has something new to show me.

However, when it comes to art, how an artist is taught, is far more important than how someone would be taught plumbing. Infact, I would assume that plumbing has a very strict order to which you do things, that are non negotiable, due to gravity, physics, laws and building codes.

Art is completely different, as an artist you will be using the subltiest of senses, and judge not only visuals, buy also and most importantly, emotions and feelings, your own emotions and feelings. Emotions and feeling aren't easily coaxed out. Harder yet, if you're not at ease with your instructor, if their style is too different, then it will be difficult to truly think about your work in a truly broad sense.

Are you strict in your instruction, do you want formal and fast rules, like: perspective, shading, and brush techniques?

Or do you want to explore, bounce around and work more from expolration and "play?" Do you like music while you work, or do you like silence? Do you like a calm and orderly work space, or do you prefer a chaotic space full of imagery and stuff? Do you like to talk, or do you want to focus? All of these are valid and important in my view, when it comes to learning and growing as an artist or any kind. And is the instructor able to or willing to have a flexibile enough way of teaching that it can work with the student.

I work by the hour, plain and simple. $45, half hour minium. However, I learn when I teach, and If I find a groove and am learning myself, my hours can go long. I truly enjoy collaboration with artists of all levels.
