About Marisa

I started teaching art at Edelman Children's Courthouse when I volunteered to work with families in crisis. I taught arts and crafts projects to the children while they were awaiting court proceedings. It felt great to offer stress relief and provide an emotional outlet for children and give their parents time and space to process intense situations.

I realized my ability to work in this envrionment and brought my skill and compassion to work in private and public schools and parks in Santa Monica and Malibu and one on one lessons.

I have been a mentor of Art Therapist, Dr. Rita Coufal, Professor at Loyola Marymount University. I studied painting at Santa Monica College, Otis College of Art and Design LA, Art Center of Pasadena, and Accademia Italiana in Florence, Italy. I've been a Professional Art Model at the Art Institute of Chicago, Palette and Chisel, Evanston Art Center and Harold Washington City College of Chicago. I've studied watercolor, drawing, oil painting, and mixed media collage.

About the lesson

I like to ask the student what they enjoy drawing or painting and what they'd like to work on specifically. If they are open to learning or don't know but would simply like to be creative I'll usually begin with an observation and hand eye coordination exercise and then move into colors. I believe that materials and comfortability are crucial to having a positive art making experience so I help students explore materials they enjoy working with and introducing new materials that could expand their resources for creativity.

I've worked with young children as small as 2 years old doing while I was a Montessori Preschool Teacher and children up to 5 years old. As an after school Nanny I taugh 6, 7, 8 and 9 year olds art and held one on one outdoor painting lessons for a 10 year old.

In a school setting I taught Summer Art Camp to children 3-5 years at Malibu Bluffs Camp and did a group art project for Second Graders at Santa Monica Franklin Elementary School.

I had a great opportunity working as an Art Model for college and graduate students at School of the Art Institute of Chicago and artists of all ages at Palette and Chisel Fine Art Academy.

I enjoyed doing a group workshop for Seniors at Warren Barr, a Residential Facilily for Post Acute Care in Chicago.

Trust yourself and your process of finding a teacher. This advice reflects my teaching style as well.

I'm fond of creating a preschool pod called Frogtown Pod for several toddlers during the Covid 19 pandemic. Following safety guidelines, I taught young children how to wear masks and we held classes twice weekly and painted, read, and socialized over snacks in nature. You would've never known if was a pandemic had we all not been wearing colorful masks.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
1/ What do I want to accomplish in my lesson?

2/ Does accomplishment in my lesson mean improve on what I already do or like to do? Or get over the fear of doing something new?

3/ Do I want to paint a person, place, thing realistically?

4/ Do I want to be free to express abstractly?

5/ What materials do I like to use and does my teacher have experience using these materials?

6/ Where am I most comfortable creating art?

7/ What time do I enjoy doing art?

8/ Is it important for me to like my teacher's art style? Have I seen it and what do I like about it that I'd like to incorporate into my own art? Or not and that's ok!
