About Jack

I provide high level, quality instruction to teenagers and adults of all skill levels. Years of performing and teaching experience combined with excellent communication skills and powers of observation result in progress that is measurable in short order.

I've recently begun offering lessons OnLiNe. This is a huge benefit to the student who lives far away, as it eliminates travel time and gas expense. It allows me to extend my range of service without having to charge more for gas and time traveling. It's a win/win! My rates are the same for online lessons and in-studio lessons in the L.A. arts district.

What's not to enjoy? I love talking about drums and drumming as much as I like playing them. I value the opportunity to articulate and demonstrate concepts, and watch the light come on in a student's eyes.

Teaching is a natural extension of performing.

Education

Holds a Bachelor of Music degree from The University of Miami Frost School of Music (drumset emphasis)

Studied rudimental snare drum technique with the late Harry Hawthorne (University of Miami), and Mike Englander (Los Angeles)

Studied drum set with Steve Rucker (University of Miami), M.B. Gordy (Los Angeles), and the late Nora Davenport (Washington D.C.)

Studied Latin percussion with Luis Conte, Alex Acuña, Luis “Wiso” Santiago, and Martin Galagarza, to name a only a few

About the lesson

Two things will happen during your first lesson: 1) A brief recap of things we'll have discussed prior to your first lesson, (What experience, if any, do you have? What music do you love to listen to? What are your goals with respect to drumming?), and 2) Depending on your skill level, I'll either introduce you to fundamentals of stick control, or review what you already know, so we may begin the process of developing, correcting, or refining your abilities in the areas of technique, reading, and your understanding of the styles which interest you.

Beginner to advanced, students of all ages. While I have taught young children, I've come to appreciate that I prefer teaching teens/adults because they have an understanding of basic mathematical division, and basic fractions. Music is inherently mathematical, so this knowledge grants access right away to the fundamental concepts involved in playing and understanding musical notation.

If you are a beginner, avoid teachers who make false promises about how easy it is to learn how to play drums, or about how you'll be playing songs within a month. I'm a straight shooter, and I pull no punches. Playing drums well is difficult. You'll find out soon enough, so why shouldn't I tell you that? But, it is also tremendously rewarding. The right teacher will show you how to enjoy the process of learning from the ground up without giving you false hope that you'll be a star in 6 months. You can have fun, and learn properly. It's all about being taught a healthy perpective.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
I will teach anyone, regardless of experience or goals. But, we must both have a mutual understanding of expectations. It is important for you to convey to me a realistic idea of how much time you have to practice each week so that I can regulate the flow of information in proportion with the time you have to digest it.
