About Aaron

I have been playing the drums for over 20 years, and love to teach people everything I have to offer.

I started playing the drums in the 6th grade, and was in concert band from then through high school. I started taking drum set lessons in 7th grade from an amazing instructor in Tacoma, Washington, and believe that a good instructor makes all the difference in a student's ability to learn and grow, while keeping up the passion of learning a new instrument.

During high school, I joined the marching band playing snare drum, and then in my senior year, I switched to the tenor drums. I continued playing tenors throughout college at Washington State University in the drumline for the marching band, and was the tenor section leader my junior and senior years. After college, I was able to continue playing tenors for the Seattle Seahawks Blue Thunder Drumline for four seasons, where I got to play at all home Seahawks games as well as a plethora of smaller events around the community. I was also the tenor section leader for Blue Thunder my last two years on the line.

After that, I continued my love for drumming by building a suitcase drumset and traveling the country playing drums in cities all over the US, and even in Canada!

I absolutely love playing the drums, and hope to teach new and existing students about this amazing instrument.

I started teaching drums as a drumline section leader in Washington State University's marching band drumline. I also taught as a section leader in the Seattle Seahawks Blue Thunder drumline, and used to teach private drumline and drumset lessons when I lived in Seattle, Washington. I had four different students and loved every minute of it.

I was in concert band from 6th grade all the way through high school, and I also took drumline courses in college at Washington State University for four years. I was also the tenor section leader for the last two years. I took drum set lessons from a private instructor for about six years from middle school through high school. I then marched two seasons of Drum Corps playing the tenor drums, in 2009 with the Seattle Cascades and in 2010 with Arizona Academy. I also played tenor drums for four years on the Seattle Seahawks Blue Thunder drumline where I was the tenor section leader for the last two years.

About the lesson

Depending on the student's knowledge of music theory, I usually like to start with getting to know the basic fundamentals of rhythm and counting, as well as notation for the drum set. If the student already has a good grasp of that, I usually begin by having the student learn a handful of basic drum beats and really work on timing with a metronome, as well as different techniques for the hands and feet. After a nice foundation has been built, I will slowly progress to more complex rhythms and beats to fill out the student's drum toolbox.

I have worked with students who have already had a basic understanding of rhythms and music theory who wanted to further their skills and understanding of the drums. I taught several people who were involved with marching percussion, teaching one student on the tenor drums and another student who was learning marching snare drum. I have also had several previous drum set students.

It's been about five years since I have professionally taught students, so I don't have any recent events to speak of. However, I can vividly remember my past students' eyes lighting up when they would figure out a tricky section of music or whatever we were working on, and the feeling I get when they figure something out and it just clicks is pure magic.
