About JOHN
I am currently completing a Master's of Creative Writing degree at Eastern Michigan University (EMU). My ultimate goal is to teach at the college level. However, so far, my greatest fulfillment has come from tutoring. I have worked in a volunteer capacity tutoring school-age children with 826Michigan, as well as professionally working with college students and student athletes at EMU (2019), the University of Michigan (2016-2018), and St. Petersburg College (2014-2016). There is nothing greater for me than giving back that which I have been given. In other words, each and every time I sit down with a student, therein lies the opportunity to help improve the quality of that student's life. It is in this spirit that I offer my services.
In one way or another, I have been teaching my entire adult life. No matter the profession, from sales to the trades, I always arrive at a position of teaching. If I am able to do something competently that another has yet to learn, then I am there.
I earned a BA in English at the Univeristy of South Florida St. Petersburg. I am currently a candidate in Eastern Michigan University Creative Writing Master's program. I have been tutoring and/or mentoring students consistently since 2014.

My aproach is rather personal: that is, each student is unique. Aside from learning what subject/assignment a particular student is working on, one of my main concerns is to aprehend where that student's learning begins--not only where that student might be struggling, but why? In this way, I can help the student gain tools and develop strategies that will aid the student not only on the immediate assignment(s), but also develop the academic confidence that comes with intellectual growth.
I have worked with students of all ages, from school-age students to those pursuing master's degrees. Interestingly, just as I always arrive at positions of teaching, I tend to work with students who might exhibit a greater degree of difficulty with their prescribed subjects or assignments. It is vital to discover, with each particular student, where and why that student may be struggling, and to furnish a greater threshold to their goals.
Ask questions about your subject. Qualify the prospective tutor about your needs and concerns. Pay attention to your prospective tutor's ability to listen to you. Do you feel confortable with the tutor? Examine your trust, because you must trust your tutor. Do you trust your tutor? Do you trust the sincerity and commitment of your tutor? Do you feel the prospective tutor has your goals in mind? Or are they merely offering rote answers to get your business?
I recently worked with a student-athlete who was preparing to go to the National Football League, but had to raise his grades per the NCAA regulations to remain eligible during his senior year of playing time and necessary for graduation. Throughout the semester, we worked on study habits, comprehension (and the tools necessary such as note taking, written questions, and organization), and meeting deadlines. He was dedicated to his goals, and is now a professional football player.
