About Sierra

Hi! I'm Sierra. I'm a recent graduate from the UC Berkeley Anthropology department, a freelance writer, and an experienced academic tutor. As a student at Cal, I tutored high school and college-level students in essay writing, reading comprehension, AP test prep, general academic organization, and subject-specific work in the social sciences (particularly anthropology, my personal area of expertise). I work with students one-on-one and always make sure to tailor my teaching methods to each student's individual needs, because not everyone learns in the same way.

I genuinely love literature, writing, and the social sciences, and I also love to share my passion for those things with my students. It's really important to me that I help my students feel excited about the work they're doing, even if it's for a class they usually struggle with -- I think that the best way to learn is to find a way to connect personally with the material and with your work. I look forward to working with you and helping you get excited about what you're learning!

I received my Anthropology degree from the University of California, Berkeley last May, after spending my final year studying abroad at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland. Both departments offered incredible courses with some of the best professors in the world, and I was lucky enough to be able to take advantage of that. I took courses in everything from the Anthropology of Death to Medical Anthropology to Geoarchaeology, and I'm well versed in all foundational anthropological texts and theories. More than that, I genuinely love anthropology -- even now that I've graduated, I still seek out anthropology-related books and articles to read, and credit my study of anthropology with shaping the way I see the world (in the best way possible!).

My degree in Anthropology (like most degrees in the social sciences and humanities) was heavily writing-based -- all of my courses required multiple written research projects, so I got a lot of writing practice in! I was also an intern at a local non-profit organization in Berkeley called Sacred Sites International, where I wrote and published a research project for the organization's print and online publication. As a tutor, I've worked extensively with students on editing, proofreading, and improving writing skills, so not only can I produce my own writing, but I also know how to teach it effectively. I am also currently a content writer for a travel agency based in San Francisco, producing monthly blog posts and informational pages for the company's website -- just so those writing skills don't get rusty. Finally, in my free time (when I have it) I work on my own creative writing projects and run a personal travel and photography blog where I share my work.

About the lesson

I try to keep my tutoring sessions fun and relaxed, while still making sure we meet the student's goals. If you're struggling to keep yourself organized (deadlines, projects, schedules, messy binders, etc.), I can help get you on track with practical tips that got me through university successfully. If you're dreading an upcoming research project, can't figure out how to start, structure, or edit an essay, or just can't make sense of that weird book you're reading for English class, I can help with that too. I'm here to help you brainstorm, plan, edit, research, analyze, write, and generally talk things out -- whether that's your own ideas for a project, a study plan for an upcoming test, or anything in between. With new students, I generally spend the first half session just talking through their needs and figuring out how that particular student learns so I can determine how to help them best -- I really focus on tailoring my tutoring to each student, and the more I get to know the student the better I can help them!
