About Simone

Hello! I am excited to enter into the world of online tutoring! From 2012 to 2016 I tutored in English and ESL at two SF Bay Area colleges, and after a long break, during which I earned a TESOL certificate and commenced graduate studies in teaching writing, I am finally returning to tutoring, my first "career love."

My goal is to provide you the tools, strategies and practices to become a stronger, more independent reader and writer so that you can make your writing an excellent example of your skills and perspectives. Your writing is a reflection of you, and I seek to bring out the best in you through your writing.

Working one-to-one in the tutoring session allows me to get to know the individual well, tailor the session to their unique needs, identify their strengths and areas of growth, and witness the student's growth and progress. The student learns from me, but I learn from my students as well about their cultures, life experiences, families, hobbies, world perspectives, and more. I also enjoy the processes of learning, thinking, revising/reimagining, and reflecting on one's work. That "a-ha!" moment when something finally clicks for a student is so gratifying!

I started teaching and tutoring almost as an afterthought.  Early in 2012, I went to Laney's campus to apply for a 6-hour per week volunteer tutoring position.  I was job hunting and figured I would dedicate one day each week to volunteering while continuing to apply for jobs.  However, on my first day of tutoring, the director was so impressed with my work that she asked me if I would accept a paid 20-hour per week tutoring job.  I had enjoyed the experience so much that I said yes without a second thought!  So began my foray into the world of tutoring, which I am happy to share with you!

I tutored English, ESL, and Basic Skills students at Laney College in Oakland (2012-2015) and City College of San Francisco (2015-2016).  Throughout this time I received ongoing training and attended refresher workshops in English grammar, tutoring techniques, effective communication, and other topics.  I worked with students on a wide range of writing prompts and essay formats, and tutored writing and reading not only in English composition and literature but other course subjects such as sociology, psychology, history, political science, and more.  In addition, I've worked with a small number of students on college/graduate school application essays, personal statements, and scholarship essays, as well as cover letters and resumes.

In 2017, I completed a 130-hour TESOL Certificate through the SIT Graduate Institute at its satellite location in Berkeley, CA.  As a part of training I taught both low-intermediate and high-intermediate ESL students, and developed skills in lesson planning, selecting and assessing learning materials, gauging student outcomes, and using online resources to enhance student learning.

My bachelor's degree is in Liberal Arts.  I took several courses in psychology, sociology, African American studies, Spanish, and health studies, along with requisite courses in English composition and literature, so I am knowledgeable in various subjects which enables me to tutor a broad range of students.

Currently, I'm enrolled in the MA in Teaching Writing program at Johns Hopkins University.  Courses I completed so far include Teaching Creative Writing, Teaching Writing Online, and Peer Response and Writing Centers.

New students should contact me to discuss their writing goals and expectations before beginning tutoring.  Together we will create a plan (including focus topics/areas, number of tutoring sessions, etc) that meets your needs.

Mostly college students, but I have worked with high school and a few elementary school students as well.  My students have come from all walks of life and numerous experiences that have enriched my approach to tutoring.  Some of my past tutees were honors students, nontraditional/adult learners, military veterans, undocumented immigrants, student-athletes, parolees, gaming enthusiasts, science nerds, aspiring poets, etc.  I have some experience working with students with learning disabilities as well.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students should think beyond the assignment they want help with.  That is, when seeking tutoring, students should aim to acquire or strengthen skills and strategies that they can apply to many future assignments and situations where writing is needed, not just to the homework that is due in a few weeks.  Think long-term as well as short-term about one's academic, professional and/or personal goals, and ask questions like:

What do I want to get out of tutoring so that I can become an independent learner?

How can I use what I'm learning now from my tutor/teacher to apply to future writing assignments and projects? (Checking in with yourself during tutoring sessions is important, to make sure you understand how to use reading/writing strategies effectively.)
