About Ken
I am a certified English teacher for middle school and high school, but as a tutor I consider myself a generalist. I have spent six years tutoring high school and middle students in all subjects, including algebra, the sciences, English and social studies. I consider writing a specialty, having worked with both college students and high school students as a writing tutor.
I find that students react well to my approach, which is calm and unintimidating. What most learners need first is someone who can help them relax the defenses that we all erect when we're struggling with something. When students feel comfortable and willing to be vulnerable, teaching can happen. My job is to quickly understand the topic, carefully observe the student, and then to teach in a way which removes the particular obstacles this learner has. I have the patience to explain a topic a dozen ways until something clicks, and the more I observe a student the better I can guess what will click for them. When students start believing they can tackle something, even if it's difficult, is when I see progress happen.
I began tutoring shortly after high school myself, helping students make it through algebra, biology, English and history. Later in life I decided to pursue teaching credentials, and became a certified English teacher. I enjoy working with students in the one-on-one setting that tutoring provides, to get a deeper, quicker grasp of the materials.

I have worked with high school and middle school students in all major subjects, from math to the humanities. Those have included students struggling in their classes, students simply needing to get caught up, and students looking to get ahead and achieve a better understanding of the material.
I have also worked with students from middle school up through college age on their writing. Whether early in the writing process, or looking at revising a completed piece, I can help writers better communicate their ideas, clean up their grammar, and know how to structure their words.
