About Kathleen

I am a licensed Massachusetts Elementary Education Teacher and am currently teaching third grade at The Eliot School in the North End.

I absolutely love teaching and have been a Boston Public Schools teacher for the past six years, teaching second and third grades. Prior to that, I have 8 years of experience at Kumon Math & Reading Centers in Belmont, Newton, and Wellesley. In Kumon, I have tutored kids from ages 4 through high school.

One thing I LOVE about tutoring is the opportunity to work one-on-one with a child. As a classroom teacher, I always encourage families who are wondering about tutoring to go for it! I have a strong belief in the value of tutoring as a supplement for every child's learning life.

Since I started at The Eliot, I have tutored 15 students in grades 2-4 in all content areas. I have helped students from all academic strengths. Most of my experience is with helping students get closer to grade level in a variety of academic areas, including math, reading, phonics, writing (narrative, persuasive, informational, literary essays, etc.).

I've also tutored students for school entry level tests, and for enrichment purposes. I also have experience with training for competitions. Proud moments of tutoring include one student who came in 13th place in the 2020 International Math Contest (IMC), 1st place in the U.S. for the Internatioanl Math Kangaroo Competition, and literary competitions regarding social justice issues! It was so rewarding to train with her and see her hard work pay off!

But I have to admit that I feel most proud when I'm working with a student who faces challenges in school, in both academic and social/emotional areas. The kids who struggle to focus, have trouble with self-confidence, or with motivation will always be the kids I love to work with most.

Other than that, I have a lot of experience with virtual tutoring if that is what you are looking for! I use many different tech tools including smartboards, document cameras, and interactive whiteboards.

About the lesson

On a personal level, I love to get to know new kids. As a classroom teacher, I made virtual appointments to meet each of my incoming third graders for 30 minutes before the school year began. During that time, I got to know each student and the type of person that they are both inside and outside of school. Those appointments, while a little awkward at first sometimes, were really important for students to warm up to me.

Academically, I'm a big believer in taking stock of where a student is in their academic progress at the beginning of tutoring. I like to start with giving a pre-assessment in order to gauge the strengths and areas of growth for a student. Then, I pinpoint specific skills to work on and let the student know what the goal is and tell them how we're going to do it together.

I recently received the Massachusetts We Teacher Award for my compassion projects. This has nothing to do with tutoring, but sort of speaks to who I am most as an educator. One of my former students' parents nominated me for teaching my students how to foster compassion within our community. Each month in my classroom, my students and I dedicate ourselves to showing compassion towards a population of people. We've done canned food drives for Women's shelters, made (and delivered!) valentines for homeless vets, and the like. While I guide those projects at the beginning of the year, my students always end up taking the reins to excitedly come up with other projects on their own both big and small. I've had students make kindness rocks to spread around the city, surprise "thank you" cards to our helpers around the community, and one year my students wrote hardcovered books of their fairy tales to create a library for Boston Children's Hospital.
