About Samantha

I am a college student, getting my degree in English: Creative Writing. I have taught violin in the past and have great experience with kids K-12. I am extremely passionate about English, writing and literature. I began privately tutoring for a homeschool family in 2019 and fell in love with it. I taught the private violin lessons for 5 years, during which time I created individual lesson plans for students and helped them to achieve their goals. Currently I work tutoring 9 kids, ages ranging from 8-14; I not only assist them in their English course work, but also in history and science. I currently work in Chattanooga, but I am willing to travel outside of Chattanooga for tutoring.

I begun teaching violin at 17 years old privately. My sophmore year of college I used to tutor foreign exchange students for $5 out of my dorm. When I quit teaching the violin I found a position assisting a homeschool mom with 9 kids; she needed help with grading and making sure all of the children got through their daily assignments.

I taught the violin privately for many years which required quite a lot of child/parent interaction, student planning, and a love of teaching. I no longer teach the violin, but I have carried skills with me into my tutoring from the years that I taught. I am currently finishing up my Creative Writing degree at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. I write constantly for myself and for my classes. I have been published through my school twice and will graduate with honors.

About the lesson

At first, I like to get to know the student and how they think (kinesthetic learner, auditory learner, etc.). I would then talk to them about their goals for the subject, what they need or want to learn; making a list starting with the most important pieces of the puzzle and going in order to the least important. Then, I would make a plan with the student (and the student's parent) about how we'll achieve these goals. Through each week or at the end of a lesson we will check off a goal or achievement to see our improvement!

I have worked with students ranging in age and cultural backgrounds. I have the most experience working with children ages 6-16, but I have worked helping college students, whose first language is not English, understand and complete their assignments.

I recently was working with an 8-year-old student who was struggling to write a short story about a bear. He wanted to write two sentences, but the assignment required four. He became very defiant about writing the exercise until we agreed that he could write the last two sentences about the bear killing a fish. I found it really funny that that was all it took.

Students and parents should always ask about styles of teaching and techniques and how the teacher will help them or their child achieve their goals. Students and parents should consider what their goals are and what they think the best way to achieve them would be.
