About Cameron

My service stands out because I am on the younger end of the working spectrum. I just graduated undergraduate in May, and I am currently completing my master’s in humanities at the University of Chicago. That being said, I approach all of my sessions from the standpoint of remembering all the things I used to hate as a student and making those same issues don’t materialize in my own practice. I reject the standard top-down approach of education in favor of a model that sees the teacher/tutor still as an authority figure, but one that works in a dialectical dynamic with their students.

My favorite thing about tutoring is seeing the ways that new forms of knowledge light up for my students. I always find the most interesting when lessons are especially geared towards the practical aspect of a student’s life in whatever capacity that might be. I think the best way to teach any subject is through breaking down the abstract into concrete. The spark’s on students faces when that happens is definitely worth it.

As far as my background goes, I have been working in childcare and education generally ever since I was sixteen years old. I worked at a Jewish Community Center(JCC) from 2016-2022 every summer. In that time there, I worked with ages from 3rd-9th grade in developing skills in creativity, leadership, self-advocacy, and also critical media literacy skills. In addition to this work, I served as a college writing tutor from 2019-2021 at my undergraduate institution, Mercer University, and worked in student orientation and peer advising with my school’s Academic and Advising Services Office.

About the lesson

My process for working with new students for the first time is doing an in-take with them. Tutoring is about making sure that your students are working towards new progress, no matter how big or small, each session. I would do an inventory for them about what they are hoping to accomplish in our time together, if they have any particular feelings about seeking tutoring in general, and then begin constructing a plan that works for both of us.

Details

My general fee works around $20-$25 an hour because of my extensive work within educational spaces. However, I do like to work with people to try and help as best as I can, so pricing may be negiotated for certain income specific circumstances.
