About Adam

I am a part-time college instructor and stay-at-home dad whose passion for reading and writing runs deep. My goals for my students and tutees are twofold: 1. to thoroughly demystify the writing process (no matter the genre!) and 2. to establish efficient and effective reading strategies (no matter the text!). Brainstorming, drafting, revising, and quality note taking are driving features of my approach to studying English. I work to get my students and tutees both comfortable and confident as scholars of English in ways that can be applied to nearly any other subject.

Since 2014 I have taught composition and creative writing at a college and university level as well as worked as an administrator of a community college writing center.

I love talking with others about the practice and process of reading and writing--for pleasure or otherwise. These two modes of communication are so valuable and worthy of our attention in a world that moves and communicates at an astounding rate. Watching a student grow and become comfortable communicating in such a world is beyond rewarding to me--it satisfies me to my core.

I've always wanted to teach. It's a public service I have admired since I was young and I love being able to share my passion with others. I come from a family of education professionals, so my teaching isn't a stretch of any imagination.

I have a BA in Literature and Writing from CSUSM and MFA from CU Boulder. My coursework as a Master's student included pedagogical approaches to reading and writing in college and my work as a college instructor includes many hours of professional development on topics ranging from establishing a comfortable and inclusive rapport with students to using technology in ways that support multi-modal instruction and learning.

About the lesson

Everyone begins somewhere and it's important to embrace this notion. We will work to find topics of interest and practice reading and writing from there. We will identify areas of strength and where we can grow as English students. If there are specific assignments we'd like to tackle, finding ways to connect to the material is very important--nobody wants to read or write about something for which they do not care (myself included).

At the community college level, I have been introduced to an array of students: young and fresh out of high school, the not-as-young, the definitely-not-young, international students, English Language Learners, veterans, students with disabilities, students who love school, and students who hate school. Really, I have worked with and am comfortable working with any student.

Find someone who you can communicate comfortably with and who keeps your growth central to the lessons they provide. It's of no help to be railroaded and dragged along when trying to lean something new or develop your understanding of a nuanced and fairly subjective topic such as English.

My youngest daughter was born in 2019 and I decided to step back from full time employment in order to be home with her. It was a difficult decision, and it still is very trying at times, but this quality time with my little one has been such a pleasure and reward.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What kind of learner are you? Are you the hands on, try it yourself kind of learner, or do you do better with thorough explanations and structured lessons before working on an assignment? Are you a visual learner or auditory? There are many approaches to answering this question, but having an idea of how you learn best is a valuable bit of knowledge to bring with you just about anywhere.
