About Birgitte

Hello! I would like to help you gain some confidence reading, writing, speaking and listening in English. Let me know what you need help with, and we’ll come up with a plan for you. I’m happy to work with you on a single homework assignment, but you can employ the techniques I will share with you on every reading and writing assignment. There are two parts to success; the first is learning the practical tools that will increase your language awareness, the second is practice. I will teach you the tools, and I’d like to guide you as you practice until you have the confidence you need to quickly recognize language features in a text, and communicate effectively.

Bring me your texts and I will share with you several easy to remember and specific approaches to language and visual analysis. By interpreting the language used in a text, the parts of a story, and the incorporation of images used in different types of text, you will soon recognize specific word choices, common structures and visual elements, and you will become a discerning reader. Bring me your writing and presentation assignments, and I will work with you on structuring your responses to any type of assignment. There is an art to this, and I can help you master the art of communication.

I really like the 1-1 interaction I have with my students. I really like getting to know you and my goal is for you to learn and apply some simple techniques for reading and writing so that you gain enough confidence to do the work without my help.

About the lesson

First of all, let me tell you that I really like tutoring and I know my stuff very well because I have been coaching and teaching reading and writing for a very long time. How I will help you depends on what you need or want but most of the students I tutor want help with school assignments. For example, if you have an essay you need help with, I will ask you to share with me the assignment directions and any ideas you have or work you have already done before we meet so that we can make the best use of our time together. If you are uncertain about how to proceed with a written response of any kind, it is best to discuss a strategy and outline for your writing before you write, but I also make suggestions for edits and I can proofread your writing for you if you alredy have a first draft. If you have a research essay, I can review formatting, proper citation and sources with you. If you have a reading assignment and you need help with literary analysis, I can teach you some literary analysis strategies that will help you understand any type of text.
