About Tanya

My tutoring services are completely tailored to YOUR individual goals and capabilities! I have experience teaching students who have not been able to find tutors who speak their native languages. Through customized tutoring, I have created culturally competent lessons/videos/training that have allowed us to overcome the language barrier and given students the skills to build their English speaking/reading/writing abilities. Similarly, for more advanced students, I create challenging content to enhance their writing or reading comprehension skills. My tutoring is student-centered and revolves around YOUR experiences and goals. We work together to help you achieve your dreams in a way not possible in large classrooms or through books. (Though I do love books!)

I began my teaching experience while interning for a non-profit dedicated to servicing recently arrived refugees. At the time, most of the clients I worked with had recently arrived from Afghanistan or Colombia. Learning more about different cultures and watching my students become proficient (and independent!) because of their newfound language skills has been an absolute pleasure. I love my work because I get as much from the lessons as my students do! I've even managed to learn a new language in my teaching time. I truly believe that communication makes the world a better place. I love that my profession allows me to help others build those communication skills.

I began as an assistant case manager for a non-profit dedicated to recently arrived refugees. At the time, I was a mentor and was charged with helping find jobs/housing for our clients. As I continued my work, I realized the need for holistic integration into American culture. Many students, women especially, had not been educated in their native countries. Thus, learning English and learning to navigate life in an entirely different country was their next priority after having secured housing and a stable income. Though at the time, the organization had neither the funds nor the infrastructure to provide consistent tutoring lessons, we began to think of ways to incorporate this into our future growth. I took charge of systemizing our tutoring program. Through trial and error over the course of a year, we created multilingual lessons and slowly began to offer this English learning service to clients. I have since successfully tutored many families, primarily women, and it has been an absolute pleasure to see them grasp a new language, culture, and life. Similarly, I am incredibly thankful to them for sharing their stories with me and for helping me succeed at something I now love doing; teaching.

I studied Spanish and French through University. I lived in South America for over a year in my early twenties. I am ACTFL certified in advanced Spanish writing and in Superior Spanish Reading proficiency. I have a Master's Degree in International Relations.

About the lesson

I always begin by asking the student what their goals are. While some students may be newly arrived to the country and need survival English skills, others may have years of living experience in an English speaking country and are now looking to improve their reading comprehension or their business English skills. After discussing goals, the student and I work together to create a plan that will allow us to reach those goals in a timely manner. My tutoring is entirely student-centered. I ask about interests, hobbies, etc. to create lesson plans that will keep students engaged while providing practical language skills.

Ultimately, your learning experience is as much affected by your teachers' teaching ability as it is by your relationship to the learning process! Any successful tutor should prioritize your learning goals and create a safe space for you to practice a new language. In your tutor search, make sure you are comfortable with your tutor.

Details

All lessons are charged hourly. The minimum teaching time is 1 hour. Most students benefit from multiple sessions a week. Typically 3x a week for three months is an excellent place to start. Depending on the goal, we can talk about scheduling. Starting price is $45/hr.
