About Catherine

Though my tutoring business has not been formally established until now, I have been teaching English composition, rhetoric, and literature since 2016. I am passionate about what I teach! I love to teach students that they are not bad writers, but instead, we will work together to obtain tools that will help you achieve your writing and reading goals. I've taught numerous sections of composition and rhetoric, in which I focus on the writing process and persuasive language. I've also taught many literature courses (my favorite thing to teach!), in which we read poetry, short stories, and novels as a way to discuss important cultural themes. I love to read and write, so I feel lucky that I get to teach and tutor for a living. I'm finishing up my first year as an English PhD student, and I am appreciative of being a student again. I'm still teaching every semester, and I love working with students from many different backgrounds along the way. I feel that I have an advantage because I'm both a teacher and a student at the same time.

While I was completing my Master's degree in 2016, I was hired as a teaching assistant at my university. I was also hired as an adjunct at a local technical college. Once I started teaching, I realized I would never shift to another career!

I received my Bachelor's degree in English literature in 2013, my Master's degree in English literature in 2016, and I am currently working on my PhD in English. I'm finishing up my first year of the program and expect to graduate in 2025. I have also been teaching composition, rhetoric, and literature courses since 2016. I worked for almost three years as a full-time instructor at a technical college where I taught dual enrollment courses, so I have experience teaching college material to high school students, along with traditional college students.

About the lesson

When I work with a new student, I like to have a conversation about their goals. Are they interested in improving their writing skills? In what way? Do they need help with persuasive writing, literary analysis, technical writing, etc.? What is their writing process like? I work by asking a series of questions in order to better guage what kind of tutoring the student is seeking.

I have worked with many different types of students. For the past year, I've been working solely with 4-year university students. At my full-time teaching job, I worked with high school dually enrolled students through a technical college. I've also taught nontraditional students who are returning to college from careers, the military, etc. I've worked with students of all writing levels and backgrounds.

I would tell a student who is looking for an English tutor to ask questions to ensure that your tutor/teacher understands exactly what it is you're aiming to achieve. English teachers are some of the best, but work hard to find someone who complements your learning style.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What kind of learner are you – visual, auditory, kinesthetic (hands-on), etc.? What do you want to achieve through tutoring? What do you think you need the most help with when looking for a tutor (writing, reading, analysis, proofreading, spelling, grammar, etc.)? Think about your favorite teacher; what quality or qualities make them most memorable?
