About Keely

I have a passion for the English language, the art of creating worlds unlike anything we could have ever imagined, and I enjoy sharing that passion with those students who may struggle to take that initial step in understanding what makes English an interesting subject to study. I take into consideration the student's background and past relationship with English and reading, and try to use that in order to create a learning plan more tailored to their needs.

I enjoy watching my students find their love for English, especially if that means they begin to love reading. I have a passion for books, specifically those of a fantasy variety, and I hope to spread that love with those who I tutor. English can be very complex for some students when they try to memorize every rule and regulation that coincides with the language. This can deter them from wanting to actually understand what they are learning and, instead, they do the bare minimum to pass by. I enjoy raising their standard of learning beyond the minimum so they begin to strive for excellence, all the while finding their own passions for learning within the subject.

I am an undergraduate student at Drake University in Des Moines Iowa where I am a double major in Biology and Health Sciences. I have tutored students from elementary school to high school for 3 years. My background in science involved me reading and reviewing/dissecting scientific articles for lab reports on a variety of topics.

About the lesson

My process usually begins with gathering as much information about their current stance with English as a learning subject. Wherever the student is presently will help me to determine where improvement may be needed and where little help is necessary. From there, I construct a work plan specifically tailored to not only their needs but also their wants, meaning areas of English or reading they want to learn more on that may not be pertinent to their overall learning, but they are still curious about.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students should consider what areas they struggle most with when it comes to receiving any form of tutoring for any subject. These areas are extremely important to focus on in order to round out their understanding of the subject overall. They should also areas where they may be more interested in learning, to the point where it extends outside of the required learning.
Another key question to think through would be what learning style that student works well under. Are they more of a visual learner, a hands-on learner, or an auditory learner? By providing this information to your instructor, they may be able to recommend the next best resources for the student to approach.
