About Nancy

I have 28 years of teaching experience in English, Spanish, and ESL in the state of NE. 23 of the 28 years I taught at Norfolk High School.

I think I'm very good at getting to know a student and their personal struggles with the subject we're working on. I had to do when working with my ESL students.

But I can talk until I'm blue if the student doesn't have to motivation to work hard. I can't give them that motivation, but perhaps I can help them see why they've gotten to the point of needing a paid tutor.

I love working one on one with students. It's a different tactic than working with a whole class. I can focus on one student and not worry about what's happening with the other 29.

In my focus, I can take the time to explain and have them practice to enrich their learning. I live for the "ah ha moments" when I can see the lightbulb turn on in their heads. That's when they understand something they didn't before. Exciting.

About the lesson

Depending on the student's mood, we can dive right in to the lessons or spend some time just talking. If they're nervous or upset they won't be able to concentrate on any lesson.

This gives me a chance to ask them questions about a variety of topics pertaining to their studey habits, why they think the subject is so difficult, what subjects they like in school or think they're better at. I can ask them then how is studying for that subject different than how they study for Spanish or English.

I can ask them what they already know about the subject, and after they tell me "nuthin'" we can talk about the basics that they probably have already learned to help them realize they do understand parts of the subject.

Pre-tests of the content we'll cover can be helpful if they're just not telling me anything. These are best as a last resort.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What are the reasons that I don't understand this?

Has it always been hard for me? Do I blame the teacher when I really could try harder?

Do I need someone to explain the topic better, to show me how to do the work with examples? Would I learn better if I could move because sitting in a chair is such a drag? Or do I find the desk a comfortable spot and don't want to put myself in front of anyone.

Can anyone at home help me? Have I asked others for support or help with the class? Who did I ask? Or why didn't I ask anyone?
