About Kelsey
I graduated from Marina High School in 2015 with a 4.83 GPA; an SAT score of 2270; an ACT score of 31; and a 5 in AP Calculus B/C, English Literature and Language/Comp., World History, US History, Chemistry, Psychology, Government and Economics. With my good grades and my wide range of extracurriculars, I could have pursued a wide variety of majors at a wide variety of the colleges I was accepted into; but I ultimately decided to got to UCLA for Theater, in which I received my BA last year and finished with a GPA 3.805.
I chose this path for several reasons. For one, I've always been interested in a wide variety of academic fields, and I knew that the BA program offered to Theater students at UCLA would allow me to continue to broaden the horizons of my knowledge in meaningful ways. More than anything, however, it's because I believe that connecting with people and sharing information is absolutely vital to a healthy society; and though this concept is emblematic of theater, it is even more emblematic of pedagogy. Incidentally, the reasons why I love theater are the same reasons why I love to teach and tutor, which I've done informally for friends and UCLA student groups for several years: I love to offer help and guidance to my peers, I love to share knowledge, and I love to inspire people around me to do their very best!
All this to say, I am particularly experienced in tutoring English literature/composition and essay writing: I've written A grade papers consistently for the past eight years! However, I know lots about a lot of different things, so if we agree to focus on a particular subject but you also need help in other field, I'm totally game to offer guidance in those subjects as well!!! In short... I can't wait to get started!!!
A very dear friend and mentor of mine once suggested to me that the best way to approach a subject is to find what is most interesting to me about that subject. That idea has been a guiding light for me as a student and individual have the years have gone on: academic success comes from a genuine enthusiasm for learning more about a particular topic, which takes a certain amount of awareness about the thing that you like to learn about. I love to teach, therefore, because a good teacher is someone who helps a student find those things that they like about a subject! And I got started teaching because I wanted to share this idea, and to inspire as many people as I can to seek what they love about learning!
I acquired a BA in Theater from UCLA last year, finishing with a 3.805 GPA; I have been writing A-level papers for 8 consecutive years, and have exemplary stanadrized test scores. Additionally, my education in theater as given me an excellent set of communication skills which translate well into teaching, which I have exercised through leading workshops for various classes and student groups throughout my time at UCLA! I also have a younger brother, whom I've occasionally tutored!

I like to spend our first session sharing introduction, and then beginning to learn about the student's reasons for taking on a tutor and what they hope to gain from the process! Thereafter, I explain how the average session will be structured for that particular subject (homework/problem review, essay proofreading, sharing resources, etc.). However, I like to keep this structure relatively flexible, due to the fact that every student needs different types of guidance with regards to a subject; so the more I know about a student's study habits, the more I can tailor-make our sessions to best fit their needs.
I have worked mostly with peers, but also have experience working with teenagers and middle-schoolers.
I would recommend looking for a tutor who is willing to listen actively to your needs as a student, and will customize their approach based on those needs. I would also recommend looking for a tutor who is willing to learn and grow themselves, by dedicating themselves to the particular material that the student wishes to be tutored in, and by having the capacity to ask valuable critical questions about the material: no tutor knows everything, and anyone who says they do is lying!
I was recently a puppeteer in the Pasadena Playhouse's production of Little Shop of Horrors, where I met and worked with George Salazar (from Be More Chill), Amber Riley (from Glee), M.J. Rodriguez (from Pose), and Kevin Chamberlin (from Jessie/Seussical/Addams Family/Legally Blonde), among other great artists! That was an absolute blast.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What are my trouble spots in the course related to this subject?
What can I do to prioritize my studies such that I address those trouble spots?
What are things that I like about this subject, or that excite me with regards to this subject (nothing is a valid answer)?
What are things that I dislike about this subject, or that bore me about this subject?
What are subjects that I do like, or what's my favorite subject?
Why do I like that particular subject more than others? What inpires me to learn more about those things?
