About Jessica

My approach is unique because I teach beyond getting the right answers. I instill in my students strong study habits, critical thinking, independence, and confidence.

I helped an 8th grader advance from all D's and F's to all A's and B's. She graduated to the 9th grade AND made the honor roll. My 2nd grade student raised her reading level in just a few sessions by 300+ points. Her parents have also repeatedly vocalized an increase in her confidence. One of my students got into her first choice, UCI. Another client got a perfect SAT score.

I create a plan tailored to the specific student. For every session, I provide the parent with detailed notes: the work we did in session, assigned homework, and progress.

My background is a BA from Scripps College, which is the 26th top liberal arts college in the US. I earned a perfect score on the SAT English section.

In addition to academic guidance, I offer mental health support. I have 15+ years' experience in meditation, breathwork, and mindfulness techniques. These skills complement academics, given the mental health toll school takes. Nowadays, COVID has exacerbated this even more.

My students and clients highly enjoy and benefit from my guided meditations, journaling exercises, and mental health check-ins. Nurturing these aspects leads to better grades, higher confidence, and happier people.

I've worked with people from all over the world, including English language learners from South Korea, Taiwan, Mexico, Kenya, India, China, Saudi Arabia, Colombia, and more. This shows my prowess in teaching a language that is often times confusing and challenging due to its mixed culture.

I value the relationships I build with students and their families. My current clients and I are going on four years together now. I've watched kids grow into teenagers, and then into young adults. We have developed strong trust, which is essential for any healthy relationship. I feel genuinely lucky to support them not just as students, but as individuals with their own dreams and bright futures.

My approach is unique because I teach beyond getting the right answers. I instill in my students strong study habits, critical thinking, independence, and confidence. I create a plan tailored to the specific student.

For every session, I provide the parent/guardian with detailed notes: the work we did in session, assigned homework, and progress. This allows the student to feel they have enough freedom to breathe while the parent/guardian stays updated.

Each student is different, so take your time finding the right fit.

Ask yourself what your priorities and goals are. Are you only interested in better grades or are you looking for something more? Does the student struggle to speak up in class, give oratory presentations, make sound arguments, and show pride in their work? Is the student performing poorly due to mental health or self-esteem rather than an issue of intelligence?

It's important to remember that impressive credentials or high grades doesn't necessarily result in a competent instructor. Many tutors apply the same methods to work with all their students, regardless of individual needs and goals. This is a blind spot to look out for. Quality mentorship requires patience, understanding, and active listening.

An honest tutor will be forthright if they don't think they can help. For example, I openly tell clients and students which subjects I'm confident teaching and encourage them to seek out others for these areas. Make sure the person you hire is genuinely invested in what's best for the student.
