About LaShawnda

Mrs. McKenzie's Tutoring was created to help students who are struggling in Reading concepts including phonics, phonemic awareness, writing, comprehension,fluency and grammar.

Students are assessed to see what deficiencies they have and a plan is put together to help students achieve the goal of mastering each skill.

I have a Bachelors degree in English and a Masters degree in Education: Curriculum and Instruction.I have 3 years experience as a Reading Specialist and have a certification in supplemental instruction in Reading and Math. ( I tutor more than just Reading!!) I have 8 years experience as an elementary school teacher, 2 as a preschool teacher and 15 years experience tutoring.

I love the moment when you see a child's "light bulb" go off. The moment when they get the concept they have been working on for so long! They become so much more confident in their capabilities and its amazing to see!

I began teaching pre-k as an assistant and then as a classroom teacher. I then went on to get my degree in teaching and moved to elementary teaching.

I have a BA in English, a MS in Curriculum and Instruction, a teaching certificate in elementary education, middle and high school English and a certificate in supplemental support in Math and English. I have 15+ years experience in tutoring, 8 years of experience in elementary education with 3 of those being a Reading specialist.

About the lesson

I greet both parent and student and introduce myself. I listen to the parent about their concerns or concerns of the student’s teacher. I also speak with the student about what they feel they may be struggling in.

I will then assess the student to see actual deficiencies and discuss the outcome with both the parent and student and speak about an action plan and goals to help the student achieve proficiency.

We then discuss the amount of time, pricing and schedules.

I have worked with students from urban and suburban areas, students who require intervention instruction, general education and students with autism.

Make sure that the teacher you select is a good fit. Does the teacher help you achieve your specific goals? Does the teacher have an action plan? Do you feel comfortable around them?

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Think about the areas you feel like you are struggling in. What are your needs? How will you know when you have sucessfully mastered a skill?
