About Pamela

When appropriate and beneficial for students, I tutor 2 students together. Students can sometimes feel defeated if they believe they are the ONLY one who needs extra practice. My experience has shown that when working with a peer, students not only show greater gains in skills, but enjoy the process without realizing they’re actually working.

The most enjoyable aspect of teaching (tutoring) is watching students self confidence grow. They often become more willing to write. Once they begin to fit the pieces together? The desire to read and write stories of their own is magical. It gives the student a sense of accomplishment. I often hear from 10 year olds, “ I still have that book I wrote in 1st Grade.” 📚

I have always had a love of children. However, I was concerned after having my son that students are not always taught on their own level. Wether the student is reading above grade level or below, both instances should be given just as much energy and vigor to grow in their skills. No one should be left behind, and neither should a student be stifled and given less energy just because he is more advanced.

I am Reading Recovery Certified, National Board for Professional Teaching Certified and trained extensively in Guided Reading. I also have my Oklahoma Teaching Certification in Elementary Education and Early Childhood Education. However, the most valuable resource I bring with me each time I begin a session is the lessons I learned from the 100’s and 100’s of student’s who taught me that regardless of the circumstances, each one could say, “I can read!” by the end of the first 6 weeks of school.

I begin by assessing not only the students academic strengths and weaknesses, but also their personal interests. If students can read and write about what they have a strong interest in? Their vocabulary begins to grow exponentially because they’re not just reading the top 100 Sight Words, they’re reading what they love. ❤️

i have worked with gifted students, below level students, ESL students and students from 6-13 years of age. Students who make you laugh and students who make you cry. I have spent my entire career teaching students who were living at or below the poverty line. These students, regardless of race, language orientation, or physically or emotionally abused are the future of our nation. Each deserves a quality education and be set up for success in what will be an even more competitive job market in their future.

My strongest advice would be to make sure you are comfortable enough to communicate with the teacher openly. To look for ways the teacher reaches down to be on their level. One of my favorite quotes with my students is, “Never above you, never below you, ALWAYS beside you.”

Communication and trust are two doors that must be open for learning to not just strive, but thrive!

While it is of the upmost importance for students to read and write, it is just as important to see adults modeling these activities. One of my favorite things is when students begin to take on the character in their reading and writing just as they watch me do these things. Watching adults model reading for their children or neighbor’s children and then students mimicking this with little brother or sister brings me an extreme sense of pride.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students or parents of students should be sure and think through the time that is needed not just with a tutor, but with practicing just like they would practice cheer, football, horseback riding, gymnastics, etc. “I Can” do anything takes practice.
