About Erin

I love teaching students the fundamentals of reading and math. I am currently a resource teacher for Dist. 50 in Gages Lake. I am fun, encouraging and I teach to mastery!

I love working with students and seeing their growth through progress monitoring assessments. I also love working with parents, as I am a mom of 3 children myself. I love seeing those "aha" moments, when students understand a new concept!

At 3 years of age, both of my sons were enrolled in the Early Childhood program at their school district for having developmental delay. Upon going into the classroom and helping with field trips, parents days etc., I knew that IU needed to be a teacher. I especially enjoyed working with students that needed a bit of extra help in school. I would not be where I am without my own children showing me that every child deserves to be heard, and taught in the way that they learn best. While being a "stay-at-home" mom for 3 years, I worked on my Master's in special education and found a job at the school in which I student taught. I am currently a 1st-3rd grade resource teacher and I love every minute of it.

I have a communications degree from UW Parkside and a Master's degree from Purdue University in Special Education.

About the lesson

My process for working with a new student would entail obtaining the student's guided reading level and giving a brief math assessment to gauge student skill level. I would discuss with parents the student's background pertaining to school (ie, does he/she have an IEP or 504, how does the student best learn, does he/she have any interests, etc). I would explain the programs in which I use to teach and gain feedback as well.

I have worked with a wide range of students. I have worked with student's with ADHD, Autism, Anxiety, Learning Disabilities, Emotional Disorders. I also have 3 children of my own, 2 of which have ADHD and anxiety. I have taught from an 1st grade level-7th grade level.

I think a teacher needs to adhere to the way you are comfortable learning. (ie, you want to sit on the floor and work, we can do that; you want to drum with your pencil while I am reading you something, we can do that, etc). Each student learns in a different way and all teachers should be cognizant of that.

I am fond of the way in which our community has come together throiughout the Covid-19 pandemic.

Before beginning to work with students, I always discuss 5 things that they want and need from a teacher. This usually starts a discussion, in which students are more apt to open up to me about their feelings towards school, teachers, academics, etc.
