About Jennifer

I hold a bachelor's of science in English Education from the University of South Florida, with a minor in writing, and an ESOL certification. I spent two years in the classroom in Florida teaching intensive reading and English to middle and high schoolers. I ran the Writing Lab (a student tutoring service) in college. I tutored 5 students in reading comprehension and standardized test prep over several months, bringing many of their reading levels up by several grades.

I can teach almost anything in the English and language arts field, but I excel at helping those that struggle with reading comprehension. I've worked with kids with dyslexia, learning disabilities, autism, mutism, depression, behavioral issues, speakers of other languages, and kids that simply hate reading.

I left the classroom 10 years ago to puruse a job in the entertainment industry. I have recently found myself out of work due to Covid-19, but I never lost my passion for teaching. I am still an avid reader and life-long learner. I am here to help you learn.

I love helping students to think critically and learn new skills. I love inspiring students to learn to love to read what excites them. I love making learning fun, and leaving students with life-long skills and strategies for learning.

I was inspired by many incredible teachers I had in high school, and chose to make education my major in college.

I did many hours of student teaching in college, including an internship at the high school level.

I tutored 5 students through a company funded by a No Child Left Behind grant. All five students' test scores rose; I even brought one 14 year-old dyslexic student's reading level from a 1st grade to a 6th grade level in 4 months.

I peer tutored extensively in high school and college.

About the lesson

I first assess the student's needs and current skill levels. Then I form an instructional plan to help the student meet his or her educational goals.

I taught 6th-12th grade at-risk girls at a drop-out prevention school.

I taught intensive reading to 9th grade level 1 readers in an urban high school setting.

I taught 9th grade honors students English I during my student teaching internship.

The students I tutored were at-risk and impovershiped.

I have experience with many different kids of students.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students should be honest with themselves about what their strengths and weaknesses are. Students should know what they hope to learn or what skills they need to improve.
