About Sarah
My first experience teaching was when I was ten-years-old and my little sister needed writing help. The two of us sat side-by-side on the couch for hours as I fumbled my way through my first time teaching, and slowly improved.
In college, I got a job tutoring at an elementary and discovered that I still loved it, especially the aha! moment when a student comprehends something they've been struggling with.
I hold a BA in Linguistics from the University of Oregon, which is just a fancy way of saying I know a lot about English and language in general. Throughout my life, I've helped tutor and teach others, from younger members of my own family to more formal arrangements as a tutor during college and post-graduation.

Initially, I like to get to know the student a little and identify the best ways to help them learn before we begin exploring what areas they need help with. I like to establish mutual respect and a shared end goal so that everyone is on the same page.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
First, think about the times you've learned best. What methods did the teacher use? Try to identify your learning style, because that will help you identify which tutor will be able to help you the best.
Then consider the topic you need help with, and try to identify any specifics that are causing particular trouble - for example, if you struggle with writing essays it might be because you don't really understand the standard format or it could be because you need more practice organizing and presenting your ideas. A good tutor can help you identify these things, but it will help them if you arrive with some ideas yourself!

My pricing system begins at a standard $20/hr for tutoring. I have endeavored to keep my prices low to be able to help as many students as I can. For students seeking 5+ sessions, we can explore slightly discounted rates (i.e., $18/hr for 5 one-hour sessions, for a total discount of $10).
