About Michael

Greetings students! My name is Mike, and I am a professional/published writer and academic instructor. I have worked as a professional tutor since 2009 at both independently, and at East Stroudsburg and Centenary Universities. I am also an adjunct professor who has taught English language arts and literature at the University of Scranton, East Stroudsburg University, Centenary University, and Montclair State University. Over the years I have had the honor of working with a very diverse collection of students, ranging across the spectrum in age, experience, economic status, race, religion, and learning ability. I have experience with ESL students and with students with learning disabilities. It has been my experience that dedication and mindfulness are more important than natural ability, and to this I have found that any student can learn to write and to read critically.

Beyond academics, I am an active writer and reader myself. I am a recipient of the Martha E. Martin Awards for both Poetry and Fiction, as well as the Jane Coil Cole Poetry Scholarship. My work has been published in such periodicals as Lifeboat, Mobius Poetry Magazine, and Let’s talk Philadelphia, and my poetry chapbook, “Meditations on an Empty Stomach” also won the 2015 Arts by the People Chapbook Award and is schedule for release by Finishing Line press in October of 2019. I am also the Lead Editor for D10again.com, where I not only contributed many articles of my own but oversaw all contributors and writing assignments for the website. I tell you this to show you how much I love writing, and that the written word is a deeply rooted passion of mine: one I hope to share with you.

About the lesson

My philosophy on teaching is one of immersion. To understand and develop the core principles of language and composition one must immerse themselves into the mind of the writer through constant analysis and reinforcement of all elements of literary and rhetorical technique. Once the foundation has been established, the study of the English language becomes an engagement of questions. How do we react to language? What can we discover, both about society and ourselves through language? How does the evolution of language affect our lives and mentalities? Language, at its heart, is a social medium, and it needs to be taught in such a manner that reflects this principle. Therefore, my classrooms are full of group activities and intensive teacher/student interaction. I am not one for extensive lecturing, because language needs to be interactive to be taught properly. Language is the blood flow of culture, and our students must be skilled practitioners of language in order to function at the highest level in our media drenched society. We as English professors hold a profound responsibility to show how language affects us on a professional level (as evident in journalism or advertisements), and how language affects us on a personal, emotional level as well.
