About Heidi

I have worked successfully in the education field, owned two successful businesses and also served in the medical field. My experiences and education give me many experiences on how to motivate students. I can clearly convey iinformation to employees, students or patients in a manner that leads to understanding and mastering the task at hand, while hopefully enjoying the satisfaction of mastering something that once seemed insurmountable. I am also known for my motivational skills and my love of learning is almost always contagious with my students.

I absolutely love what I call "aha moments" from my students. This happens when something that a student didn't understand suddenly becomes clear to them and it is so amazing to watch the understanding in their eyes!

I decided to become a teacher after I had already received a degree in nursing and also in business. I knew I wanted to do something where I knew I was making a difference in this world. I thought what better way to make a difference than to work with children! I decided that I really should continue going to college, so I received my degree in education and became a teacher.

I have a Bachelors of Science degree in education and a minor in language arts, along with additional graduate degree course work. I received a Montessori education as a child as an adult I studied the Montessori practice and taught at an accredited Montessori school. This gives me a variety of teaching methods to help my students to learn the most effectively by adopting an individualized teaching method that is tailor-made for each student according to their skills and how they learn. I find this to be thre most effective, enjoyable and rewarding.

About the lesson

I meet with the student(s) caregivers to find out what they think their student is in need of as far as tutoring goes. I then talk to the student and ask what their expectations and hopes are for themselves from receiving tutoring. When appropriate, I may also ask for aptitude tests that were administered through their school system. I also evaluate how the student I interacted when we got to know one another. I also ask the student and the their caregivers if they think I am a good match.

I have worked with all types of students ranging from at-risk, special education and advanced learners.

Make sure that you are comfortable with the tutor. English and language arts deal a lot with expression of feelings and it is important to be able to feel confident and safely able to communicate with your tutor. I also think that a tutor needs to be relatable to their student. I would suggest finding someone that you think can relate to you and your life.

My 17-year-old daughter just received her ACT results todayand did exceptionally well on her composition score. She is an advanced student but struggles with compositions and I am really proud of the effort she put forth for her exam. I know that it was really hard for her, which makes it even more special

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
I think that students should try to think about areas that maybe give them stress in their schooling or make them uncomfortable or maybe even angry about. These are probably areas that the student might need help in. I think asking yourself honest questions and giving yourself honest answers will lead you to the type of questions that you would like to ask of your tutor. I also find it helpful when students ask me what I would do in certain situations. This gives the students an idea of what kind of a teacher I am and whether or not I am somebody that they would be comfortable working with.
