About Rebecca

I have 8 years of experience as a formal tutor helping students improve their writing skills. Whether a student is applying to college, completing a class paper, or working on a big project like a thesis or dissertation, I offer support and guidance at every stage of brainstorming, writing, revising, and editing. I help my students develop their own unique voices and express themselves clearly and effectively. When I work with clients, my focus is not only helping them to write a better paper; I want to give them a toolbox that will enable them to become better writers!

I enjoy seeing students' eyes light up as they see their paper or essay improve. Every writer has something unique to say, and I see my job as a tutor as helping those ideas come out. Writers often come to me seeking help with one essay or paper, and leave with skills they can use throughout their lives. I am a PhD student, and I understand how difficult and frustrating academic writing can be. My favorite part of being a tutor is seeing students of all levels improve.

About the lesson

When working with a writer, I start by asking questions to discover the student's main goals and concerns. If the writer has a draft, I read it out loud, and explain to the student what I understood to be their main ideas. I have the writer explain to me the purpose of the paper and what they are wanting to say, as well as any difficulties they are having expressing themselves. When offering written feedback, I point out the strengths of the writer and highlight how they can build on those strengths to make their work even better.

When working on improving a piece of writing, I always begin with the big picture: What is the main idea? Does this paper answer the question in the prompt? Is there a clear thesis with evidence?

Then, I address clarity of sentence structure and grammar. When addressing grammar and syntax, I always point out the rule so the writer can continue to improve in the future.
