About Angela

I first started tutoring students in 2015 at a public library for America Reads-America Counts. Ever since then, I've tutored different types of students from pre-K to college students. Please see below for my teaching experiences.

Chapman University – Academic Advising Center Probation Peer Mentor Program

Probation Peer Mentor, July 28, 2017 – December 15, 2017

I helped students regain good academic standing. I worked with many types of students, including those with ADHD and one who was recovering from alcohol abuse at the time. Because of how diverse my mentees are, I had to be flexible when working with them. I saw them weekly to help them develop academic success skills, such as time management, reading strategies, test-taking strategies, note-taking strategies, and study skills. I worked with the academic advisor by sending weekly progress notes to provide information on each student’s progress and for additional support.

Brett Torino Foundation Education Services Tutor, August 23, 2016 – December 13, 2016

I tutored children who couldn't attend school due to requiring inpatient treatment for their chronic illnesses. Most of them were either diagnosed with cancer or Sickle-Cell Anemia. I made activity plans for patients who couldn't do their homework due to the side effects they experience from their treatment.

Clark County Library Tutor, October 6, 2015 – August 16, 2016

I tutored pre-K to high school students in reading, English, math, and science at a public library. I worked with many students belonging in underserved populations. Working with them allowed me to interact with their parents. They told me what areas their children struggled in and to update them on their progress. They also told me barriers to their children’s academic success. These include not having enough money to hire a tutor for them and not being able to teach them due to language barriers.

University of Nevada Las Vegas DANA Foundation: Brain Awareness Week

Volunteer Presenter, December 6, 2016

I went to a local elementary school to teach students about basic neuroscience concepts. I hosted interactive workshop stations that focused on learning about the brain’s structure and function, brain damage and disorders, and helmet safety. When I was at the stations, I explained complex, neuroscience topics using age-appropriate language to help students fully understand these concepts. Having to do this has made me more effective in working with children. Educating the students was very rewarding because of how enthusiastic the students were in wanting to learn about neuroscience.

Volunteer Science Tutor, September 8, 2015 – December 8, 2015

I tutored undergraduate students on the following subjects: general biology, general chemistry, molecular genetics, biochemistry, and organic chemistry. Being a tutor challenged me to become more accommodating with students due to each of them having different learning styles. Doing so allowed me to become more effective in helping them to fully understand concepts and improve in their courses. I also taught undergraduate students how to develop better study skills, such as goal setting and time management.

Peer Advisor, September 10, 2015 – December 10, 2015

Incoming freshman science majors must see their advisors during their first semester at UNLV. I presented information on campus resources, study skills, and how to plan their course of study. I also gave tips on how to succeed in college.

I enjoy seeing my students improve and succeed in their academics. Although I teach my students the skills they need, I believe that it is their efforts that are mostly responsible for their success.

I started teaching when I was an undergraduate. I applied to be a tutor for America Reads-America Counts.

Besides my teaching experiences, I received a Bachelors in Science in Biology and minor in Psychology at the University of Nevada Las Vegas. I am also a graduate student at Chapman University and I am currently applying for medical school to earn my doctorate degree in medicine.

About the lesson

I usually identify their strengths, areas they need to improve on, learning styles, and other important academic skills such as time management, note-taking strategies, test-taking strategies, and more. After identifying these areas, I tailor my services that will meet the student's needs.

I've worked with pre-K to college students. However, I've mostly worked with pre-K to elementary students and college students.

I would advise the student to ask the teacher what subjects they are comfortable teaching in and provide information, such as course grades, to demonstrate to the student that the instructor is knowledgeable in the subject they plan on teaching. Also, I would advise the student to ask the instructor what types of students the instructor has worked with (e.g pre-K, high school, etc.).

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
I encourage students to talk to their professors when they are struggling in their classes. For example, whenever a student a mine does not do well on an exam, I encourage the student to go over their exam with their professor and show the professor their thought process (e.g. "I chose this answer because.."). This will show the professor the student's thought process and helps that student correct their way of thinking. After the student identifies what they got wrong, I use that information and implement it into my lesson plans.
