About John

Preparing for college? Looking for tutoring support in writing at any level? Need advice on a professional or creative project? Looking to develop fluency in English? I can help.

I have more than 20 years of experience in higher education, teaching writing classes at the college level and directing a tutoring program, and I specialize in personalized, one-to-one learning strategies.

I'm inspired by the moments of discovery and growth that can occur when two people focus their attention on a task together. True learning isn't just about working hard (though that usually helps). It's also about getting the right kind of guidance from an experienced mentor at the right time. I'm here to provide that.

I can help you develop strategies for success with any work that involves writing, reading, or speaking--from college admissions essays to literary analysis, from preparing for interviews to learning English grammar, including ...

* Providing guidance with essays and expository writing in any subject matter at any level

* Completing applications for scholarships, internships, college, or graduate school

* Preparing for standardized tests like the SAT or ACT

* Preparing for exams or quizzes in English or literature courses

* Working on personal and creative projects

* Improving fluency in English for non-native speakers

I have a PhD in Composition and TESOL (Teaching Enlgish to Speakers of Other Languages), and I have more than 20 years of experience directing tutoring programs and working one-to-one with students in a higher education setting. This is what I do!

About the lesson

In our first meeting, we'll make some decisions together about what approach works best for you. I'll want to get to know some things about you and how you typically get your work done. From there, I'll help you set some goals, and we will develp a specific plan for going forward.

I work with students from high school through college and graduate school. I also work with adult writers on personal and professional projects.

Perfect! During the 2022-2023 school year, John tutored our two children (junior and freshman in high school). John quickly got to know our children during their separate sessions and built a strong rapport with both of them. Our children are very different types of learners, and John found ways to successfully engage and support each of them. Our daughter said, "He is so flexible and willing to adjust what we are working on to what we actually need help with. We set the agenda together. He also really values our ideas and takes the time to ask us what we think." Our son explained, "He helps walk me through things instead of just telling me how to do something. Sometimes that's harder in the moment because I have to think more, but then when I go to do something on my own on a test or for an assignment, it's much easier. I have really learned how to do the things he has shown me and I am much more confident that I can do them on my own." As a parent, John has been incredibly professional. He communicates about schedule, billing, student progress, and shows a genuine interest in our kid's well-being and success. We are so glad that we found John and STRONGLY recommend him to other families!
