About Zion

I have a love of English and a love of explaining its value to humanity, explaining its technical parts, explaining how to apply it in effective written and verbal communication, and explaining how to analyze it in literature.

I get to interact with students who I was not long ago in the shoes of! I get to help them to the best of my ability and impart knowledge of a subject I love.

I am starting my Junior year of college, so my age neccesitates inexperience. However, I have taught or tutored in some capacity for the past three years, and each coming year brings more experience.

I am not a well-credentialed tutor, but I will do my best with all eagerness!

About the lesson

First, I want to know what a student’s relationship is with the subject. Does he/she love it, but is struggling? Does he/she really not enjoy the subject and tends to do it begrudgingly? Something else? This gives me an idea of how I can best serve the student. If they really don’t like the subject, I try to show him/her why I like it and why it’s really important and interesting! This doesn’t mean a student is required to enjoy a subject, but I am convinced it is helpful to.

Second, I want to learn what a student already knows and what he/she is already comfortable with. This gives me a foundation to work with.

Next, I ask what is particularly challanging to the student or what he/she is not understanding.

Then, I try my best to go through each of the difficulties and make them more clear through examples, illustrations, exercises, and other helpful means so that the student can better grasp the concepts or applications.

What specific things am I struggling with?

Am I not doing well with this subject because I don’t understand it or because I haven’t had a good attitude towards it? Not even the best tutors can change an attutude towards learning (though they can help); only you can change it.
