About India

Hello, I am India Harvey and I have been tutoring Elementary level students since 2017. I am a sophomore at Sacramento State.

English has been my favorite subject for as long as I can remember and I have always been very proficient in that subject. I have always found a love for reading writing papers. In elementary school, I was already at a highschool reading level and in the 6th grade, a poem of mine was published in a book.

I enjoy working with students and watching them progress during our sessions. I like the excitement the kids have during the tutoring session and seeing the smile on their faces when they get outstanding grades on their tests and homework.

During the tutoring sessions, I like to incorporate many different ways of learning; for example, I like to use: games, youtube videos, drawings, Quizlet, etc. I want the children to not only do good in school, learn, and have a comprehension of their school work, but to also find a love for learning and want to learn more.

I began tutoring in high school. I have younger family members that were struggling in school. One, in particular, had a hard time in English and Mathematics. His attention span was also very short and he did not like answering or asking questions in class. After working with him for a couple of months, his grades increased and he began to enjoy learning and participating in class.

This encouraged me to work with other students because I found that the work may be exhausting for the parents, child, and even the tutor, but the results are beautiful. I enjoyed watching my students fall in love with learning and even wanting to challenge themselves to do better or do work that is harder all on their own.

Since 2017, I have been a tutor to kindergarten, first, fourth, and fifth-grade students. I also worked with my church, Worship Center Community Church, and was a children's church leader and teacher.

About the lesson

When working with a new student, I first ask them what they would like out of me and what they expect of me. Then, I would ask them to write down all of the areas they think they need to work on or could be better at. These can vary from being able to speak loudly in class, without being fearful, to wanting to get 100% on all of their tests. Then, after they have done this exercise, we both can come up with a plan on how we are going to achieve their goals.

I have worked with kindergarten, first, fourth, and fifth-grade students.

I would advise them to come in with a positive attitude and know that they can do anything that they put their minds to. Having a positive attitude will help the child learn and comprehend better because they are confident that they can do the problem, they just need a push to get there.

I typically have two-hour sessions with the child and I can work with the child however many times they see fit. The pricing for these sessions is $40/hr.
