About Vita

As a freelancer, I have total control over my own rates and hours and therefore I can be flexible to each client's needs. I offer an affordable tutoring service with flexible pricing for low-income families and a wide range of subjects available. Each student has a personalized curriculum based on their needs. I supply each student was additional resources to help them succeed and move forward. Your student's success is my priority.

I am passionate about education and educational equity so I really enjoy working with under-served communities and with families to make a plan that does not fit the average student but that fits your student.

I started teaching by leading study groups of my peers where I would give short lectures and answer questions. I then began teaching music, primarily guitar, for special needs students. Here I refined my technique and teaching strategy. I then applied the same concepts of flexibility patience and persistence to academic subjects.

I'm very passionate about education and sharing knowledge, and I have personally always performed well in the classroom setting. My primary areas of expertise are in Natural Sciences English language and Spanish language as well as history. I am a Biotechnology major at The University of California at Davis, and a participant in the Ronald Laboratory investigating submergence tolerant rice. I first had literary works of mine published in 2014 and have continued to write extensively. I'm a Spanish native speaker, but I have also had formal Spanish education while attending school in Mexico and the United States. However, it is not merely performance in these subject areas that qualify me as a teacher. Even more, than I am passionate about the subject area, I love education and have worked in education formally and informally for several years.

When I get a new student, I like to try to communicate with the family as much as possible. I want to reach out and inspire each student in a way that is most effective for them. I will generally try to spend the first session assessing areas of weakness and strength. I keep detailed records of all of the things that I work on with my students so that I can track their progress and see patterns in their learning so that I can adapt my strategy to suit their needs.

I work with students 7 and older. Although at present my oldest students are 17 I'm open to working with older age groups. I also work with special needs.

It is important to find a teacher that does not talk down to the student. I find the problem in education often is that the teacher is seen as being a person who has all the answers, and the student is merely to keep their head down and take notes. This is not the case. Teacher-student interaction should be open,  students should feel that they can engage the teacher.  Furthermore, it is the teacher's responsibility to make the material accessible regardless of level of background or age.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students should be pushed to address their own areas of weakness and self reflect on what they need help with. A student will be much more successful if they recognize their own weaknesses and have taken the time to assess why those weaknesses exist.

I have a sliding scale from 20-40 dollars an hour depending on family income with an extra 10 dollar fee for in-home tutoring.  However, I can be flexible on pricing for low-income families or families that employ my services for more than one subject.
