About Maggie

Throughout my time as a K-12 student, I struggled with learning disabilities, but I found a love in reading and writing. It was often that teachers didn't understand my struggles and they didn't know how to help. I will help students learn the subject while being understanding of any academic struggles.

I got my start in tutoring several years ago when my younger sister needed help in math. I no longer tutor math, but we worked on algebra and some geometry for two semesters. Then, I began helping my high school friend with English assignments. When my brother was around 10, I started helping him format essays for school. This continued until he became homeschooled and I wrote the English curriculum for my parents to implement. Seeing their progress made me love English more and grow inspired to attend college.

I am currently working on a bachelor's degree, double majoring in English and History. I am starting a publishing company to publish my own work, as well as others'. I regulary take writing workshops, read varying types of literature, and spend my free time writing. I write English (reading and writing) curriculum for local homeschool families.

About the lesson

The first step is to examine their English experience. Standardized testing is a helpful way to start, but is not the standard I measure from. Every student is different so I do a free 10-15 minute intake conversation where we talk favorite subjects and topics, as well as other aspects of their academics. Next, I make a preliminary tutoring plan based on the intake information. After the preliminary plan is over, I reevaluate and see what worked and what didn't and adjust. This process varies based on the intended length of the tutoring job.

I have worked with all ages, but middle school students are most common.

Make sure your tutor or teacher loves their subject. A teacher who doesn't love what they do can make the subject matter dull, even if it's something really cool. The best teacher I ever had was one of my math teachers in high school. I liked math before her class, but seeing her influence on all of us, even the students who hated math, was amazing. She had this effect purely out of her passion for the material and for teaching.

I have a base of one free intake session and varying packages.

I offer a base rate of $30/hour for an individual session. Bundles are offered if you plan to use multiple tutoring sessions.

Bundles are custom to the individual but rates average $25 an hour.
