About Charles

I am a lover of all things reading and writing. I have been instructing and tutoring at the college level for over 8 years now, but my love for the field likely began back with my first Goosebumps book. I use a variety of tools and resources to show students that critical thinking can happen at a variety of levels and these same processes can be applied to academics as well. Some examples of this can come from music, comics, advertisements, and a variety of other mediums. Often students believe that critical thinking is meant for school and I help show them that many of these processes happen in our everyday lives and these same skills can be transferred into our reading and writing.

The greatest moment for me is easily when a student "gets it" rather than just nods along. I know that each student learns differently and as such I try to implement a variety of teaching methods to help the student reach that moment of truly understanding the lesson. Beyond this, I also enjoy showing students that they are typically far more capable than they themselves realize. Often we have skills and strengths that are overlooked because we tend to focus on the areas that need improvement. I try to help students realize that using your strengths as well as developing your weaknesses are both equally important.

I started teaching through the recommendations of a few of my own professors. Originally, I had planned to focus on screen writing, but after a short while spent in the tutoring center helping students I realized that I truly enjoyed one on one interactions and helping students succeed. A short while later I shifted my area of studies into developmental English and the rest, as they say, is history.

I have 8 years of training and experience both tutoring and teaching English at the college level. This also includes high school and helping students transition their skills sets into those that will help them at the college level. The focus of my studies, and in turn my own teaching, has typically been that of bridging the gap between high school and college.

My process begins quite simply. The first thing I attempt to do is determine which areas a student may require assistance in. More often than not, if I ask a student, they simply tell me they need help in grammar and punctuation. However, students usually think this because it's the most readily available mistake they've been shown. My first session with a student is usually spent determining their strengths and weaknesses. Once we've done this, usually through the use of sample writing, we then move into lessons that can specifically help the student, depending on their needs.

I have frequently worked with students from the high school level up into introductory and developmental English at the college level.

The best advice I would give a student is to make sure they actually understand their own strengths and weaknesses in reading and writing. Often we can mistake a large amount of "red ink" for being the area we need help the most in. In reality, a large amount of mistakes can be the same simple mistake over and over and doesn't necessarily indicate a student's biggest weakness.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
I believe the most important question a student can ask the teacher is "What is the goal of this assignment?" because it can shed light on a number of things. This can help determine objectives as well as teacher expectations. This helps a student avoid spending excess time focusing on something that isn't within the goals of the assignment.
