About Lisa

My mission as an educator is to ensure all my students receive the tools to succeed. For 20 years I have worked with children in grades k-12 and beyond. Specializing in literacy and language arts, I will work with your child to promote reading level advancement and reduce summer loss. I have a masters degree in special education and have spent the past two years working with children with special needs. I hold my professional teaching certificate and I look forward to meeting with you to discuss how my dynamic approach will keep your child on a positive path to success.

As a little girl I used to take all of my stuffed animals and dolls and I would line them up in my bedroom. I would then take my chalkboard and I would play school. I can remember my fifth grade teacher, Mr. Williams, giving me all of the extra worksheets that he wasn’t going to use. Teaching has always been my passion. Being able to watch my students as they make gains and succeed is the most rewarding. There was no doubt in my mind that I would always become a teacher.

I have 20 years experience as an educator in the public school system teaching grades three through five as well as special education grades K through 12. My educational background is in English/elementary Ed and special-education.

About the lesson

Before starting with a new student I sit down with parents first to get an idea of what type of learner the student is, what areas should be focused on, what are the students strengths and weaknesses, and what type of student are they over all. From there I will spend at least one session getting to know the student and doing some informal assessments to use as a basis to start tutoring.

I have worked with students from all different educational and economic backgrounds. I have worked with students on the autism spectrum, students with learning disabilities, emotional and behavioral disabilities, students with auditory processing disorder‘s, cerebral palsy, visually impaired, physically disabled. I have also worked with talented and gifted students.

I would tell that student that the most important thing is that they feel a connection with the teacher. They should feel respected by the teacher and they should consider what they want to get out of the tutoring.

I was blessed this year to work with a 22-year-old student with a SD. Our goals for the year were to work on functional living skills as well as transitioning from the structured school environment to the workplace. Last week I watched as he graduated from the I I program. Watching him stand in front of a crowd of people and share his words about his successes was extremely rewarding.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students should ask the teacher how the teacher is going to learn exactly what it is that they need. They should ask the teacher what types of strategies do they use when working with students? They should also make sure that the teacher has enough availability for them.
