About Stephanie

I have experience working with children and students from infancy to special education adult transition programs. I have an Associate of Arts Degree in Child Development from Mount San Antonio College, a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Early Childhood Studies from Cal Poly Pomona, and I am currently a student in the Education Specialist Credential program. During the school year I work as an instructional Assistant in a Kindergraten/1st Grade classroom for students with moderate/severe disabilities- which I have been doing for about four years.

As a person that has studied the holistic development of human beings, I have come to understand that we all have special needs with varying degrees and types of supports that we require. I believe in viewing and teaching a student via a holistic and individualized approach. In other words, all aspects of a person's health affect their performance and every person's learning and performance style is unique and I try to cater my teaching, lessons, and activities with that in mind. For instance, I am a visual learner and so I prefer to learn via visual presentations such as documentaries and I draw pictures and charts in my notebook to translate my understanding; simply sitting through a verbal lecture would most likely not lead to me wholely understanding and retaining that knowledge.

My love for teaching stems from my own love of learning. For a long time, I longed for lessons and classes that peaked my interest; but unfortunately, they were few and far between However, as I mentioned earlier, once I learned my learning style, I have become addicted to learning. Suddenly, history and social studies make sense and I actually enjoy the subjects I once despised. Learning about the world around us is so essential to become a productive member of our society and being able to find our own identity in the world. Seeing that lightbulb and "aha" moment in a student's eyes is one of the most satisfying feelings for a teacher.

Another important element is who you are learning from. A professor once told my class to think back to a subject in school that we disliked and one that we loved. Then, she asked us to think about who the teacher was that taught that subject. Did they cater to your learning style? Were they supportive of your learning experience? Did you feel safe to take intellectual risks in their class? A teacher's demeanor in the classroom can have such a huge impact on their students. It can turn their entire learning experience from either exciting and intriguing to intimidating and dreary.

I have experience working with children beginning more than 10 years ago via babysitting, as a summer camp counselor, a volunteer assistant in classrooms, student teaching and observing to earn my degrees, and through unemployment with the Rowland Unified School District.

I have an Associate of Arts Degree in Child Development from Mt. San Antonio College, a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Early Childhood Studies from California State Polytechnic University of Pomona (Cal Poly Pomona), and I am currently a student in the Educational Specialist Credential Program where I hope to earn my credential to work with students with Moderate/Severe disabilities and also a credential to work with students with Mild/Moderate disabilities.

I have also been an instructional assistant for the Rowland Unified School District for about four years. I assist in a Kindergarten/1st Grade special day classroom for students with Moderate/Severe intensive needs.

After having received some background information (age, grade, abilities, difficulties, needs, personality), I prepare a mutitude of activities and lessons in order to use a trail-and-error process to determine the student's abilities. I never want to assume that a student is incapable so I always want to begin with trying something that may be of a higher level and scaffold down. For instance, if a Kindergarten student in having difficulty with addition, I can backtrack and check if they understand the concept of addition, if they can recognize that those symbols represent numbers, and if they comprehend the amounts that each number represents.

I also can try to present the information in different ways. For instance, if they did not understand the concept with just numbers, then use visuals like circles or concrete representations like counters or teddy bears.

Once I determine the baseline or abilities and understanding, then I present the information in different ways so that they understand the concept in different contexts and how it relates to the real world. Lastly, I can slowly increase the level of difficulty and assess throughout.

Currently, due to COVID-19, I am offering 1-2 hour online tutoring services either live through Zoom or with pre-recorded lessons. I can provide the learning materials and plan the lessons/activities or I can help with and/or add supplemental materials to school assignments. My rate is $35-$40 depending on a case-by-case basis such as the subject, complexity level, and intensity of supports required.

For essay proofreading, I charge $2-2.50 per page depending on the complexity of the assignment. I can complete this by highlighting and leaving comments for areas that may need adjustment and a paragraph to summarize the overall achievement of the assignment.
