About Ross

I have been teaching since 2008 and have taught every grade level from pre-K through high school. I am a certified educator for Elementary K-6 and English 6-12, and I have earned my Reading Endorsement in the state of Florida. Outside of the classroom, I have taught SAT and ACT preparatory classes as well as tutored numerous students in elementary math. Within the area of English,nI am highly proficient in all aspects but my strongest areas are grammar, writing (informative and argumentative), editing, literary analysis, and reading. As a student I struggled with reading and writing which is why I strive to make those concepts and skills easy to digest and master.

I was led to a career in teaching by a passion for learning new things and sharing that knowledge with others. The look, the pride, and the joy that my students demonstrate as they experience the aha-moments of learning is why I teach!

I have a Bachelor's of English Literature from the University of Central Florida where I also completed numerous courses in education and exceptional student education. I Have been teaching since 2008 and have taught every grade from Pre-K through high school. I have also completed the rigorous coursework and earned the Florida Reading Endorsement and I hold the AICE General Paper certification. I have been tutoring privately since 2015 and have tutored SAT and ACT test preparatory courses, math, and all aspects of language arts.

About the lesson

My typical process for working with a new student is to hear about their areas of struggle, review previous work on which they struggled, and to create a plan with the student and/or parent to help the student overcome their struggles and master the skills and concepts necessary for success.

I have taught students of all grade and ability levels.

The advice that I would give to a student who is looking to hire a teacher in my area of expertise is to ask questions and explicitly communicate your needs. This will help the teacher to determine how best they might be able to help you and the teacher's answers will help the student to determine if the teacher is the best fit for them.

Recently, my 10th grade students were reading a 1950's book that they had read in 8th grade and which they did not have a fond experience. As were read the book, we periodically stopped to discuss parallels to our modern day society. At one point, one of the students who had expressed the most dislike of the book from 8th grade, suddenly said, "Oh my gosh, I totally get this now, this book is so good!".

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
The questions through which students should think before talking to teachers are: 1) What are my specific struggles? 2) What evidence/examples of my struggles can I provide to the teacher to show them how I struggle? 3) Does this teacher have the experience to help me with all of my struggles?
