About Nancy

I am extremely dedicated to helping students succeed. I validate and empower my students. I have worked with students as a case manager, counselor and school counselor for over 20 years. I see the strength and unique talents each student possesses and I support, guide and inspire them to exceed their unique potential.

I am a Master's level counselor and a certified life coach. I currently work as a recovery counselor with teen boys. I have worked with children of all ages. I also speak conversational Spanish.

It's very rewarding to work with students. I especially enjoy seeing them move from frustration and desperation to feeling empowered and accomplished.

I volunteered in my son's special education class. I became a school counselor in 1997 and worked in classrooms, designed interventions, worked closely with families and provided one-on-one tuturing and counseling to students. I also designed and facilitated leadership programs for students.

Master's Degree in Counseling Psychology

Many training hours over 20 years in writing strategies, scaffolded teaching, student-driven learning, writing, test-taking, stress and anxiety management, learning accommodations, learning difficulties, motivational interviewing and coaching.

About the lesson

I listen carefully and reflect back what I've heard them tell me. Once we have an understanding of what the student is struggling with and what kind of help they desire, we create a plan together for meeting the student's goals. The student thoughts, feelings, frustrations and specific strengths are considered carefully with compassion.

Students at risk, foster children, students learning English as a second language, college students, high school students and elementary students.

Make sure the tutor listens to you and validates you right where you're at, recognizing your strengths.

Go with your gut; make sure you feel a connection with the tutor.

Ask the tutor to describe their method to you and ask lots of questions.

Make sure the tutor's strategies match up with how you like to work, and make sure they have ideas you've never tried or thought of.

I worked with a high school male who had always struggled with writing and preparing for tests. He had very low self-esteem and had been acting out and skipping class because he hated it so much. He was a very talented artist, so we designed a method where he could draw his ideas and plan his writing through pictures. He was then able to transfer those pictures into an outline and begin brainstorming descriptive words, through orally dictating his ideas into a recording app. Being able to utilize his strength of drawing, engaged and motivated him to complete a final writing assignment for a class he had been close to failing. With support and encouragement, he completed a very solid and creative essay that earned him his first "B" grade ever, in that class.
