About Jillian

Hello, my name is Jillian Townsend, and I am a private flute teacher here in Portland, Maine. I have been playing the flute for over 16 years and teaching lessons for the past 5 years. I just graduated BYU studying flute performance and had the privilege of being the Principal and Co-Principal flutist of the BYU Philharmonic. In 2019, I won the Utah Flute Association Sonata Competition, and in 2022, I won the BYU Concerto Competition and performed the Gordon Jacob Flute Concerto with the BYU Symphony Orchestra.

As a teacher, I am passionate about helping my students develop confidence both as performers and in their daily lives. I believe that learning music can be an incredibly powerful tool for personal growth and development. I am committed to creating a positive and supportive environment for my students, where they can develop and grow their musical abilities while experiencing the joy of playing the flute.

One of my main goals as a teacher is to help my students develop a deep love and appreciation for music. I believe that this is the key to sustained growth and progress on the flute. By cultivating a passion for music, my students are able to stay motivated and committed to their practice, even when faced with difficult challenges or setbacks.

I am also committed to helping my students develop strong technical skills on the flute. I believe that a solid foundation in technique is essential for success as a musician. As a teacher, I work with my students to develop their tone, articulation, and phrasing, as well as other fundamental skills that are essential for playing the flute at a high level.

Finally, I am dedicated to helping my students set and achieve their musical goals. Whether it is preparing for an audition or competition, mastering a challenging piece of music, or simply improving their overall technique, I am here to help my students achieve their dreams and reach their full potential as flute players.

About the lesson

Flute lessons offered by Jillian are tailored to each student's needs and level. Lessons can also be held online. Lessons are also available in South Portland. The first lesson is free to define learning goals and methodology.
