About John

I help English language learners with grammar and pronunciation using puzzles and games.

I have nearly 10 years of experience teaching English as a foreign language to all ages and abilities. Before opening my own language school, I was the senior teacher at a language school for adults in Bangkok, Thailand.

I specialize in teaching speaking and communication skills.

My lessons are fun yet challenging at the same time.

My courses:

Level 1: Spaces Clues, 25 lessons

Level 2: Bars Clues, 25 lessons

Level 3: Vocabulary Sentence Clues, 100 lessons

Level 4: Sentence Clues, 25 lessons

Level 5: Advanced Sentence Clues, 25 lessons

Level 6: The Tower of English, 100 lessons

I enjoy it when students see their past work and realize how much they've improved.

I also really enjoy helping my students have fun while they are learning and knowing that I am helping them expand their horizons.

I first thought about teaching English while I was in Finland as an exchange student during high school. It was the first time for me to have to compare English to another language and learn how all of the grammar rules work. While in Finland I learned one of the two official languages there, Swedish. Later, while in college at Northern Arizona University, I spent a semester at the University of Bergen, Norway, as a guest student and expanded my language abilities. After graduating from NAU, I found a teaching job in Thailand and stayed for almost 2 years. Then, after 4 years back in the States, I was recruited by a langugage school for adults in downtown Bangkok by an former colleague. It was there that I really became an English grammar expert and started developing my own teaching methods and materials. I was there for 5 years and ended up as the senior teacher at my branch. After that I started teaching at a high school, which enabled me to open my own language school on weekends. Currently I am in the process of opening my teaching business full-time, online and in-person, which is how and why I found this website.

As the senior teacher at an English language school for adults, I created materials, interviewed prospective students, trained new teachers, invented new teaching methods, led open grammar sessions, edited theses, organized and led student trips and social activities, and taught classes for every language skill, including speaking, listening, reading, writing, grammar, usage, vocabulary, accent reduction, conversation, business English, and presentation/interview skills.

I have a teaching certification from ECC Thailand, but am mostly self-taught, having created my own language curriculum based on student needs and responses, i.e. trial and error and continual development.

I have worked with students of all ages and abilities, and many nationalities including Thai, Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Lao, Malasian, Taiwanese, Italian, French, Russian, Mongolian, and many more.

My advice for English language students looking for a teacher would be to make sure that that teacher is passionate about their success and willing to adapt their teaching approach to match their students' personalities, goals, strengths, and weaknesses.

It snowed a lot the other day, something I'd missed living in Southeast Asia for so long. Cold weather is so nice sometimes!

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What is the end goal of my idea to increase my knowledge?

How will I be able to measure my improvement?

Do I have enough time to do this?

Is what I think I want to learn really what's best for me?

What is my actual current knowledge of this subject?
