About Steve
I enjoy working with students one-on-one or in small groups. Rather than "lecturing" to students, I like to start out by asking them what aspects of the material are causing them difficulty. Often, when students are allowed to try to explain the material in their own words, break-throughs in understanding become possible.
My educational background is broad and deep. I have studied both physics and English literature at the doctoral level, earning PhDs in both of these subjects, and I have worked for many years as a writer. I enjoy the broad perspective that my academic studies and job experience have given me when I work with students on specific subjects.
My only formal training in education was as a graduate student in physics -- teaching laboratories -- and as a graduate student in English -- teaching freshman composition. However, I have experienced many kinds of teaching in many subject areas, and I have tried many study techniques on my own.

About the lesson

I ask the student to talk about what they have been learning, breaking it down into major areas -- a kind of on-the-fly mental outlining process. We write this down and look at it visually. I ask the student to describe ways in which what they are currently learning connects with other things that they have learned in the past. We try to make a mind-map. Only after laying out this general map, which doesn't take long, do we proceed to specific questions.
