About Leo

I like to cover a broad range of topics, and relate them to music as a whole. Proper technique on any instrument is crucial, but so is being able to function comfortably in a group (this includes jamming out to a backing track in your bedroom!). I will often accompany the student with many different instruments, and encourage them to improvise. I am not a "from the book" teacher, I take what the student is interested in and expand upon it.

I'm a firm believer that developing as a musician can be a huge part of who you are, and it is a privelage to be able to help students realize this.

I love music, and I get so excited about it I feel the need to explain it to other people! When I figured out people will pay me to talk about something I love, I realized how fulfilling this could be for both myself and my students. I searched for a while to find something where I could get my foot in the door, and found the Salvation Army. Now, two years later, here I am on this website.

I have no formal teaching education, but attended college for music theory. My first teaching gig was for drums at the Salvation Army in Pittsburgh, mainly teaching to kids 7-12 years old. I have also coached high school musicians on music theory, helping them to better understand their pieces.

About the lesson

I like to start by finding out what the student is most interested in, what type of music they like to listen to, and what their goals are for learning a new instrument.

Kids 7-12ish, high school students, and a few adults 40-65.

Make sure you find out what a teacher is all about, what their background is, and what styles of music they like to listen to! Come to the lesson prepared to explain what your goals are, and ask the teacher how these goals will be accomplished. You might not find the best fit first time around, and I will never be offended if one of my students decides to go with another teacher they can work with more effectively.

I just joined my best friend's band to play bass! I am so excited to start working with them.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Definitely think about what styles of music you would like to play, and what sort of experience you want to have as a student. I don't like following lesson books, but some students might enjoy that style of teaching! Try and imagine yourself as a student, what does it look like? How does it feel to be learning?

As a new teacher on this website, all of my lessons will be $15/hour, or $10 for a half hour.
