About Jonathan

As a new guitarist many years ago, I tried the whole, "getting professional lessons," trick. The problem was most of the lessons weren't really lessons, they were teachers pushing a book into my face and telling me to read and practice. No effort, nothing personal, just a robotic idea of how to teach someone guitar and pump the dollars out of them and it pissed me off. How was I learning anything when I barely got any attention from my teacher? So instead, I took my love of the guitar and formulated my own personal approach to teaching it. No books, no lesson plans, just a concrete promise to students that no matter what skill level you're at, you will always have my focus 100% of the way. I've always been a lover of music and, for me, teaching guitar is my dream job. People come together through music and being able to pass on the skills and knowledge I have to someone else and allow them to strengthen themselves and others is quite possibly the highest reward any teacher can be given.

I have always had an interest in teaching guitar even when I was young. Throughout my high school days, I had many of my friends who would ask if they could be taught, but I never really pursued the idea of teaching regularly until after college.

As a guitarist, I have spent the past 17 years dedicating myself to my art. I attended State Fair Community College in Sedalia, MO in 2014 and received an Associate of Arts degree in music, primarily focusing on the study of the guitar.

About the lesson

I like to get a feel for my students the first time I meet them. We discuss what they want to learn, what types of music they like, and we evaluate their skill level. From there, we proceed by establishing good fundamentals and basic guitar habits, possibly fixing bad habits, and then build up to playing the things the student wants to play through the student's practice and my guidance.

I have worked with several students of all skills, ranging from older and more advanced students learning techniques from Randy Rhoads and John Mayer to the new and just beginning learning basic chords and simple melodies.

Always have a meeting with the teacher first and listen to what they ask you. Every teacher should take a personal interest in their student if they are a good teacher. If they don't ask you what you want from them and what you are looking to learn, then they are more interested in money than your progress.

For the past year or so, I have been working with an older student, a man close to 65 years old, who is a blues aficionado. He spent his first few years learning guitar from Youtube, but he never could get the ideas they teach to fit together into his playing. Recently, he and I have been building his skills and he has become confident enough that as long as he knows the key of the song, he can play improvised solos over almost any blues song you can think of and he has been using this skill to play jam sessions and band events on his own.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
There are a few things. Do you have time to make a practice schedule? Whether I see you once a week or twice a month, the bigger part of your progress depends on your willingness to practice every day. What can you afford? If you're a beginner looking to become the next Muddy Waters, that means you will need lots of lessons and trying to haggle over prices to save a few bucks isn't going to change that. Will you stick with it? I can't promise you instant results. If I did, I'd either be an amazing salesman or a poor liar. Either way, you will need time and effort to grow into the player you want to be. Are you willing to take the time and stick it out to get where you want to be?

Details

Typically, pricing will be based on the skill level of my student. Students who are beginners will not pay the same price as someone with much higher skills. Beginning lessons usually start at $25 an hour and consist of a basic curriculum. Intermediate to advanced lessons usually begin at $40 an hour. The other deciding factor is my drive. Students who require me to drive to them will pay more than a student who is willing to come to me.
